Matteo Berrettini should, on paper, be a nightmare to face in indoor conditions, where his huge serve and forehand do maximum damage. His fitness, however, has been shaky and unpredictable, and that leaves a question mark over how long he can sustain his level.

Kyrian Jacquet arrives in the form of his life after a superb run in recent weeks, and he has the confidence to make the Italian work for every point. Berrettini should still edge through, but a tight, drawn-out battle looks very much on the cards.

Berrettini Targets A Strong Indoor Campaign In Lyon

  • Berrettini has won at least one match in seven of his last eight events.
  • He holds a 14-11 record against players ranked outside the top 50 in 2026.
  • Jacquet has a 5-7 career record in tour-level opening-round matches.
  • He holds a 2-7 career record against top-50 players.

Berrettini Looks To Overcome Fitness Concerns In Lyon

Matteo Berrettini has struggled with fitness issues throughout the season. Before the clay-court swing, he dealt with abdominal problems and illness earlier in the year, while more recently, hip issues have prevented him from performing at his full potential.

Despite these setbacks, the Italian has produced some notable results, reaching the quarterfinals at the French Open and in Rio de Janeiro, as well as the third round in Miami, Monte Carlo and Wimbledon. Those performances have helped him remain inside the top 50 in the rankings.

Berrettini will make his debut in Lyon. Last year, he played four indoor hard-court events and reached the quarterfinals in Vienna and Metz, while also clearing the opening round at three of those tournaments.

Jacquet Carries Recent Breakthrough Form Into Lyon

Kyrian Jacquet qualified for the main draw this week after winning both qualifying matches, including a retirement victory over Michael Mmoh in the final round. This marks his first main-draw appearance in Lyon after losing in qualifying in both 2021 and 2023.

Before the Asian swing, Jacquet struggled with consistency, winning only one main-draw match across six tournaments from Umag to the US Open. However, he has produced breakthrough results at tour level in recent weeks, reaching the semifinals in Hangzhou and the quarterfinals in Tokyo.

Those performances helped him break into the top 100 and achieve a career-high ranking of No. 76 recently. Last year, the Frenchman won 13 of 18 matches on indoor hard courts, including reaching his maiden tour-level quarterfinal in Metz. He will now look to extend his recent rise and reproduce that indoor success in Lyon.
