Hurkacz has impressed during the Asian swing, but his recent retirement and Djokovic’s title-winning momentum favour the Serbian.

Djokovic Carries Beijing Triumph Into Shanghai

After losing both of his matches during the North American swing, Novak Djokovic kick-started his Asian swing with a strong run by winning the title in Beijing last week and extending his unbeaten record there to 34 matches.

The Serbian was boosted by the result considering he faced physical issues in the earlier rounds and took on in-form opponents Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Alex de Minaur in the later rounds. However, he produced impressive performances to defeat all three.

Despite the recent title, the 39-year-old has largely struggled with fitness issues and has played only a limited number of events this year. His notable results include reaching the final at the Australian Open and the semifinals at Wimbledon.

He will now look to continue his title-winning momentum and produce another positive result in Shanghai this week. He has played here 11 times before and reached the quarterfinals on every occasion.

Hurkacz Continues His Push Back Towards The Top 30

Hubert Hurkacz defeated James Duckworth in straight sets to reach the second round at the Shanghai Masters, winning 6-3, 7-6. He fired 19 aces, never faced a break point and converted the only break point he created during the match.

The Pole struggled for wins following his return from injury earlier this year, winning only one main-draw match on tour during the first three months. Those difficulties eventually forced him to drop out of the top 100 a few months ago.

However, his recent results have improved, including a fourth-round run at Wimbledon, a third-round appearance in Montreal, a final in Chengdu and a semifinal in Beijing. Those performances have brought him close to returning to the top 30 in the rankings.

He has reached at least the fourth round in his previous two appearances at the Shanghai Masters and will look to continue that trend this week.
