Recent performances have tilted the balance towards Shapovalov, though Griekspoor has shown he can make this a difficult matchup.

Shapovalov Faces A Crucial Opening-Round Test

  • Griekspoor has failed to win a match in nine of his last 13 events.
  • He has a 5–8 record against Top 50 players in 2026.
  • Shapovalov has a 9–11 record against players outside the Top 50 this year.
  • He has an 8–10 record in opening-round matches on tour this year.

Griekspoor Searches For A Winning Rhythm Again

Tallon Griekspoor registered back-to-back main-draw wins on tour for the first time since February by reaching the fourth round in Montreal, but he suffered an abdominal injury in Cincinnati and then exited in the first round at the US Open the following week.

The 30-year-old had a solid start to the year, reaching the quarterfinals in Montpellier and Rotterdam and the final in Dubai, but a hamstring injury there significantly halted his progress in the following months.

He has played 18 events this year and suffered an opening-round exit in seven of them, including four of his last five events.

Last year, he made his debut here in Chengdu but suffered an opening-round exit against Taro Daniel after leading by a set. He is now looking for a better result this week.

Shapovalov Targets A Return To His Chengdu Best

Dennis Shapovalov’s level dropped significantly in the middle of the year, as he won only one match across six tournaments from Madrid to Wimbledon, which pushed him close to the top 70 in the rankings.

However, the Canadian has regained some momentum by reaching the final in Los Cabos and the third round at the US Open. These results helped him return to the top 50 in the rankings.

This is his second appearance here in Chengdu. His only previous appearance came in 2019, when he reached the semifinals. He now looks to replicate that result this week.
