Boston head to the 'Big Apple' on an improved run of form, having now won each of their last four games.
The Red Sox enjoyed an excellent run of form in the second half of June as they went on a five-game streak, beating the New York Yankees 8-4 and 9-3 at home before sweeping Toronto on the road.
Their streak was halted by a 5-2 defeat in Cincinnati, but they rebounded before end of that road trip, beating the Reds 4-3 and 7-4.
Boston then returned home to beat Toronto 7-6, but their form dipped as they lost 9-4 to the Blue Jays, before dropping back-to-back meetings with San Diego, 9-2 and 11-1.
The Red Sox avoided being swept though, as they won the final game 4-1, and they then built on that victory with 8-3, 7-2 and 6-5 successes in Miami.
New York Yankees Form
New York enter this series-opening matchup having just been swept in a three-game home series with Cincinnati.
The Yankees have not strung together wins since the first half of June and endured a four-game skid towards the end of last month.
They were beaten 3-1 at home by Atlanta, before being swept in a two-game series at the New York Mets, losing 9-7 and 12-2.
New York then split a four-game series in Toronto, bouncing back from a 9-2 defeat with a 16-5 victory, before responding to a 9-3 loss with an 8-1 win.
The Yankees failed to back up that second win over the Blue Jays though, as they returned home to lose to Cincinnati, 5-4, 3-2 and 8-4 .
