Seattle came into this series on the back of a defeat but in solid form having won six of their previous nine games.
The Mariners endured a five-game losing skid around the All-Star break and then failed to build on a 6-4 win over Houston as they were swept by the Los Angeles Angels, losing 3-1, 5-1 and 2-1.
They rebounded in Chicago, sweeping the White Sox with 10-0, 6-3 and 6-3 victories, before heading to Boston where they sandwiched a 10-6 win with 14-7 and 3-2 defeats.
Seattle returned home after that trip to Fenway Park and made a successful start to the series with Philadelphia, winning 10-2 and 6-5.
The Mariners failed to complete a series sweep of the Phillies however, losing the final meeting 6-0.
