The Padres set up that showdown with the Braves by putting together a 93-69 record to finish second in the National League West behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.
They went into that series having won 11 of their previous 15 games, but they had cooled off over the final week, losing three of their last five regular season outings.
San Diego put that dip behind them in their opening Wild Card game, as they shut out Atlanta in a 4-0 victory.
The Padres then backed that up, and completed a series sweep of the Braves, by winning the second meeting, 5-4.

Los Angeles secured their place in the playoffs by putting together a 98-64 record – the best in all of Major League Baseball this season.
The Dodgers finished top of the National League West as a result of that record, five games clear of playoff opponents San Diego.
They ended the regular season on a good run of form too, winning nine of their final 11 games on the schedule.
Los Angeles rebounded from an 11-9 defeat in Miami with 8-4 and 20-4 wins, before returning home to sandwich a 6-3 defeat to Colorado with 6-4 and 6-5 wins.
The Dodgers then responded to a 4-2 loss to San Diego with 4-3 and 7-2 wins over the Padres, and took their win streak to five games with a three-game sweep of Colorado on the road.
