Perez joined the UFC in 2017 after a successful appearance on Dana White’s Contender Series, and he quickly climbed the ladder with three straight wins.
His run was halted by a first-round TKO loss to Joseph Benavidez, but he responded with three more victories.
The 32-year-old American bested Mark De La Rosa via unanimous decision, before submitting Jordan Espinosa and knocking out Jussier Formiga in the first round.
That earned Perez a title shot in November 2020, but he came up short on the night as he was submitted in the first round by Deiveson Figueiredo.
He was then submitted in 91 seconds by Alexandre Pantoja, before seeing his losing skid hit three fights with a unanimous decision defeat to Muhammad Mokaev back in March.
Perez did stop his slump the following month though, stepping in at short notice to knock out Matheus Nicolau in the second round.

He tapped out CJ Vergara in the second round of his sophomore outing, and then needed just one round to submit Jesus Santos Aguilar.
Taira then earned a unanimous decision win over Edgar Chairez, before ending 2023 with a second—round knockout of Carlos Hernandez.
