Miami have lost ground on Buffalo in the AFC East thanks to back-to-back losses to start December.
Following a 3-3 start the Dolphins hit a hot streak between late October and the end of November as they reeled off four consecutive wins.
That streak started with a 16-10 win at home to Pittsburgh that was followed by a couple of high-scoring road wins at NFC North teams.
Miami downed Detroit 31-27 before heading to Chicago to edge the Bears, 35-32.
The Dolphins then beat Cleveland 39-17 and Houston 30-15 at home either side of the bye, but their form has tailed off since they eased past the Texans.
They suffered their first defeat since mid-October as they loss 33-17 on the road at San Francisco.
That then became back-to-back losses in Week 14 as Miami were beaten 23-17 at the Los Angeles Chargers to fall to 8-5.

Buffalo have taken command of the AFC East thanks to a four-game win streak that has propelled them to 10-3.
The Bills got off to a 6-2 start this season that included an impressive road win at Kansas City.
Their form took a sudden nose-dive at the start of November though as they suffered a surprise 20-17 road defeat to division rivals, the New York Jets.
That was then followed up by a 33-30 overtime defeat when they hosted Minnesota.
Buffalo’s response to that loss to the Vikings has been strong though, and they now ride a four-game win streak into this weekend.
The Bills snapped out of their funk with a 31-23 win at home to Cleveland, and then backed that up with a 28-25 Thanksgiving win at Detroit.
They then downed New England 24-10 on the road, before returning home to beat the Jets 20-12.
