Ben Shelton has been somewhat inconsistent this year, but he comes into the US Open in excellent form after winning the title at the Montreal Masters. Tallon Griekspoor, on the other hand, is nowhere near his best in terms of form, fitness or confidence, making it difficult to see him challenging a top-10 player in these circumstances.

Playing in his home Grand Slam should also give Shelton plenty of motivation to produce a strong performance.

Shelton Seeks To Build Momentum On Home Soil

  • Shelton's 12-match winning streak in Grand Slam first-round matches ended at Wimbledon last month.
  • He has a 17–8 record against players outside the Top 50 this year.
  • Griekspoor is currently on a five-match losing streak in Grand Slam first-round matches.
  • He has a 0–7 record against Top 10 players at Grand Slam tournaments.

Ben Shelton Looks to Continue His Hard-Court Success

Ben Shelton ended the grass-court season on a disappointing note after failing to defend his quarterfinal points at Wimbledon, but he bounced back strongly by reaching the quarterfinals in Washington and successfully defending his title at the Canadian Open.

Despite his recent opening-round exit in Cincinnati, his overall performances during the North American swing have been encouraging. He also reached three other finals earlier this year and won all of them, along with making the quarterfinals at the Australian Open.

This is his fifth main-draw appearance at the US Open, and he has cleared the opening-round hurdle in three of his previous four appearances, including his semifinal run in 2023.

Griekspoor Finds a Timely Boost in Montreal

Tallon Griekspoor reached the fourth round in Montreal a few weeks ago, where he defeated Alexander Zverev and Matteo Arnaldi from a set down before losing to Daniel Merida Aguilar in straight sets.

This was a much-needed confidence-boosting result for him. Before that run, he had won only two matches across his previous 10 events, highlighting his significant struggles since suffering an injury in Dubai, where he gave a walkover in the final.

This is his sixth main-draw appearance at the US Open, and he has failed to clear the opening-round hurdle in three of his previous five appearances.
