Daniil Medvedev is in a difficult place right now, having lost three of his four matches during the recent warm-up events. More broadly, he has endured a disappointing year at Grand Slam level, suffering several frustrating and demoralising defeats.

That leaves the door open for another difficult outing here, especially against a tricky and unpredictable player like Hugo Gaston.

Gaston Looks To Improve His Record At Flushing Meadows

  • He has a 1–5 career record against Top 10 players.

Daniil Medvedev Targets a Turnaround in New York

Daniil Medvedev's performances during the North American swing have been disappointing so far, as he has played three events and won only one match, highlighting his recent struggles in the region.

Despite this recent dip in form, Medvedev produced several strong results earlier this year, including titles in Brisbane and Dubai, a runner-up finish in Indian Wells, and semifinal appearances in Rome and 's-Hertogenbosch.

He has made nine main-draw appearances at the US Open and cleared the opening-round hurdle in seven of them, including runs to the final in 2019 and 2023.

Gaston Builds Confidence Through US Open Qualifying

Hugo Gaston qualified for the US Open main draw after winning three qualifying matches, including a comeback victory from a set down against Colton Smith in the final qualifying round. He will now look to extend that winning streak this week.

The 25-year-old has been more successful on the Challenger circuit, posting three semifinal or better results. However, he has struggled to replicate that form at tour level, clearing the first round only twice in eight main-draw appearances, with his notable result being a semifinal run in Estoril.

The Frenchman has made four main-draw appearances at the US Open and cleared the opening-round hurdle only once, reaching the second round in 2023.
