Juan Manuel Cerundolo reached the third round in Cincinnati last week, defeating Mark Lajal and Arthur Rinderknech before losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime. The run was particularly encouraging considering his limited success on hard courts throughout his career.
The Argentine has also produced some impressive results this year, recording his best Grand Slam result by reaching the fourth round at the French Open. He also reached the semifinal in Gstaad and the quarterfinals in Rio de Janeiro and Eastbourne. Those results helped him achieve a career-high ranking of No. 42 a few months ago.
This is his second appearance in Winston-Salem. Three years ago, he made his debut and reached the quarterfinals, and he will now be looking to repeat that run this week.

Suresh Makes His Mark With a Maiden Tour-Level Win
Dhakshineswar Suresh made excellent use of his lucky-loser opportunity by upsetting Marcos Giron in the first round, 6-3, 7-5. He fired 17 aces and saved all four break points he faced during the match.
This is his first tour-level main-draw victory. His only previous main-draw appearance also came in Winston-Salem last year, where he lost in the opening round.
The 26-year-old has made solid progress this year. Despite playing only a handful of tournaments, his performances have been encouraging, including reaching the semifinal at the Bloomfield Hills Challenger and the quarterfinals at the Bangalore Challenger.
