Luca Van Assche is in the form of his life right now, having won his maiden ATP title in Estoril last month. However, his lack of experience and proven success on American hard courts remains a concern, as these conditions are still relatively unfamiliar territory for him.

Cameron Norrie, meanwhile, has extensive experience in this region and has enjoyed plenty of success on American hard courts over the years.

Norrie Chases A Confident US Open Opening Win

  • Van Assche has a 3–6 career record in first-round matches at Grand Slam tournaments.
  • He has a 3–1 record against Top 50 players.
  • Norrie has a 6–2 record in first-round matches at the US Open.
  • He has won eight of his last 10 matches against French opponents.

Luca Van Assche Returns to the US Open

Luca Van Assche has played three tour-level events during the North American swing so far, with all of them ending without a main-draw win. However, he lifted the title at a Challenger event in Quebec City and will be hoping to bring that momentum into this week.

The 22-year-old has enjoyed a progressive year so far. He started the season outside the Top 150 but, thanks to a couple of titles on the French Challenger circuit, a quarterfinal run in Marrakech and his maiden tour-level title in Estoril, he recently achieved a career-high ranking of No. 40.

He holds a 3-6 career record in first-round matches at Grand Slams. One of those losses came in his only previous main-draw appearance at the US Open, in 2023.

Norrie's Recent Resurgence Faces a New Test

Cameron Norrie has produced some encouraging results in recent weeks, reaching the semifinals in Los Cabos and the fourth round in Montreal, along with a second-round appearance in Cincinnati.

Before those results, he had struggled for wins and even suffered five consecutive opening-round losses from Rome through Wimbledon. He has also reached the quarterfinals in Indian Wells and Barcelona and the fourth round in Madrid this year.

Norrie has played the US Open eight times before and cleared the first-round hurdle in six of those appearances, notably reaching the fourth round in New York.
