Carlos Alcaraz kicked off his title defence with a tough three-set win over Alex Michelsen in the opening round in Tokyo, 7-6, 4-6, 6-1. He squandered a 4-2 lead in the second set but regained control in the decider to finish the match dominantly.
The former world No. 1 made an impressive start to the season by winning titles at the Australian Open and Doha, while also reaching the semifinals in Indian Wells and the final in Monte Carlo before a wrist injury halted his progress.
He recently returned to the court after missing more than four months and posted an encouraging result at the US Open by reaching the quarterfinals. That was a positive result given his lack of match play, although he missed the opportunity to defend his title. He also helped Team Europe clinch the Laver Cup title a few weeks ago.
Last year, he played only one event during the Asian swing, which came here in Tokyo, where he won the title. He will now have another opportunity to earn valuable ranking points in the coming weeks.
