Borges Looks To Rediscover His Momentum In Beijing

Nuno Borges recently built momentum by reaching the fourth round in both Montreal and Cincinnati, but he failed to build on those results as he faced a tough opponent in the opening round at the US Open, losing to Learner Tien in straight sets.

The 29-year-old has lacked consistency and struggled at times during the clay season, but his occasional strong results have been enough to keep him around the top 50 in the rankings. He reached the semifinals in Mallorca and the quarterfinals in Barcelona, Bastad and Hong Kong.

Last year, he started the Asian swing in Tokyo, where he reached the second round, and he will now be looking for a similar start this week.

Djokovic Seeks A Confidence Boost On His Beijing Return

Novak Djokovic has been struggling with fitness issues, which have led to several early-round exits this year. Most recently, he suffered an opening-round loss to Mariano Navone at the US Open, marking his first opening-round defeat at a Grand Slam in 20 years.

He has played only seven events this year and suffered opening-round losses in three of them, including his most recent two. Notably, he reached the final at the Australian Open and the semifinals at Wimbledon. After missing out on most events and points, he dropped outside the top 10 for the first time since 2018.

He now looks to regain his best level and rebuild momentum with his seventh appearance here in Beijing. This is the perfect venue for him to regain his confidence, as he has played here six times and won the title on all six occasions, most recently in 2015.

Verdict

Borges arrives with some momentum from the North American swing, but Djokovic’s record in Beijing makes him difficult to oppose in this opener. Although the Serbian has dealt with fitness issues this year, his dominance at this venue gives him the edge.
