How Does the NFL Schedule Work?

The NFL regular season consists of 18 weeks, with each of the league's 32 teams playing 17 games and receiving one bye week.

Teams do not simply play a random selection of opponents. The NFL uses a scheduling formula to determine all 272 regular-season matchups.

Each team's 17-game schedule consists of:
  • Six games against the other three teams in its division, with each opponent played once at home and once away.
  • Four games against every team from another division within the same conference. The divisions rotate on a three-year cycle.
  • Four games against every team from a division in the opposite conference. These divisions rotate on a four-year cycle.
  • Two games against teams from the remaining divisions within the same conference that finished in the same divisional position the previous season.
  • One game against a team from the opposite conference that finished in the same divisional position the previous season.

The system means divisional rivals meet twice every season while still ensuring teams regularly face opponents from across the rest of the NFL.

When Are NFL Games Played?

Most NFL games are played on Sundays, but the weekly schedule is spread across several major broadcast windows.

Thursday Night Football

Thursday Night Football generally opens each NFL week, with games kicking off at 8:15 PM ET. The majority of Thursday Night Football games are broadcast nationally on Prime Video.

Sunday Afternoon NFL Games

Sunday contains the largest number of NFL games. The main Sunday windows generally begin at 1:00 PM ET, followed by late-afternoon games at approximately 4:05 PM or 4:25 PM ET.

CBS and FOX carry the majority of Sunday afternoon games, with the exact network depending on the matchup and broadcast allocation.

Sunday Night Football

Sunday Night Football is the headline Sunday evening game and generally kicks off at 8:20 PM ET. Sunday Night Football is broadcast on NBC and is also available through Peacock.

Monday Night Football

Monday Night Football traditionally closes the NFL week. Most Monday night games begin at 8:15 PM ET and are broadcast on ESPN, with selected games also appearing on ABC.

The NFL schedule can also include games outside these traditional windows, particularly around holidays, international games and later stages of the regular season.

NFL International Games in 2026

The NFL has expanded its international schedule significantly in 2026, with a record nine regular-season games being played outside the United States.

The 2026 International Games include games in London, Madrid, Melbourne, Mexico City, Munich, Paris and Rio de Janeiro.

London hosts three games across Weeks 4, 5 and 6, while 2026 also features the NFL's first regular-season games in Melbourne, Paris and Rio de Janeiro.

International games can create unusual kickoff times for US viewers, with European games typically beginning earlier than the standard Sunday afternoon NFL window.

How to Watch the NFL in 2026
