It was a bad day for a team looking to rebound from a disappointing 2023 campaign that saw them go 9-3 and miss out on the College Football Playoffs.
Notre Dame’s season was derailed by a 17-14 home defeat to Ohio State and road defeats to Louisville, 33-20, and Clemson, 31-23.
The Fighting Irish did at least wrap things up on a positive note though, as they beat Oregon State 40-8 in the Sun Bowl.

Purdue return to action after a weekend off boasting a 100% record thanks to an opening-day win.
The Boilermakers kicked off the campaign a fortnight ago, shutting out Indiana State in a 49-0 victory.
They now face a huge early-season challenge as they try to improve on a 2023 season that saw them win just four of their 12 games.
Purdue face two ranked opponents along the way, both in Big Ten play, and were beaten 41-7 by Ohio State and 41-13 at Michigan.
They Boilermakers did end their campaign with a victory however, beating conference rivals Indiana 35-31 at home.
