USA had 70% of possession and outshot Peru 16-5. The final xG totals (1.96-0.50) further underlined the hosts’ dominance.
Eleven Americans made their senior debuts, including eight teenagers. Among them was Cavan Sullivan, who is set to join Manchester City when he turns 18 next year.
Pochettino’s side have developed an impressive attacking style in the past year or so. The US scored an average of 2.3 goals per game in their last 13 international fixtures.
Chile Form
Chile make the trip to St. Louis after an ill-disciplined 1-0 defeat against Canada on Saturday. Jonathan David’s 12th-minute goal settled the opening game of La Roja’s North American tour.
The Chileans lost their composure in Toronto. Lucas Cepeda was sent off in the 36th minute before captain Gabriel Suazo received a second yellow card shortly after half-time.
Nicolas Cordova’s men offered little going forward after being reduced to nine men. Canada controlled the contest with 66% possession and 22 shots, but could not add to their early lead.
While results have improved since a dismal World Cup qualification campaign, Chile have now lost three of their last four games. A 4-1 defeat against New Zealand earlier this year highlighted their defensive vulnerabilities.
Over the past year, Chile kept clean sheets in only two of their last 12 games. The South Americans conceded two goals or more in friendly defeats against Portugal, New Zealand, Brazil and Bolivia.
La Roja also finished bottom of South American World Cup qualifying with only two wins in 18 fixtures.
