Taylor Fritz has been thoroughly dominant in his opening two matches at this year's US Open and looks well placed to continue that run against Francisco Cerundolo.

Although Cerundolo is a solid player with a strong ranking, his recent level has been rather ordinary, and on current form, it is difficult to see him offering Fritz enough resistance.

Fritz Maintains His Authority in New York

Taylor Fritz defeated Darwin Blanch and Mattia Bellucci in comfortable straight sets to reach the third round at the US Open. He has not lost more than four games in any of the six sets he has played so far.

This is Fritz's sixth third-round appearance at the US Open. He initially struggled at this stage, but has won his last three third-round matches here, including reaching at least the quarterfinals in his recent appearances.

After a brilliant start to the season, Fritz faced fitness issues that sidelined him for two months, and he played only two events during the clay-court swing. However, since the start of the grass season, he has found his rhythm and produced impressive results, reaching three finals and two quarterfinals.

Fritz has an 11-9 record in Grand Slam third-round matches. He lost his first seven matches at this stage but has since won 11 of his last 13, highlighting his significant improvement in the latter stages of Grand Slams.

Cerundolo Survives Struff Battle to Reach a New US Open High

Francisco Cerundolo secured his place in the third round at the US Open after surviving a tough five-set encounter against Jan-Lennard Struff in the second round, winning 5-7, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. After trailing 1-2 in sets, the Argentine raised his level and did not lose serve in the final two sets.

This is a confidence-boosting result for Cerundolo, who arrived this week after winning only one match across his previous four events. It is also his best result at the US Open and ends a three-match losing streak in the second round here.

Despite his recent struggles, Cerundolo has had a solid season overall, recording six quarterfinal-or-better results on tour, along with fourth-round appearances at the Australian Open and Madrid. Those results have helped him remain inside the Top 40 in the rankings.

Cerundolo has a 3-3 record in Grand Slam third-round matches, with his most recent appearance ending in defeat to American Zachary Svajda in the third round at the French Open a few months ago.

Verdict

Our Verdict
Fritz's dominant start to the tournament and superior current form make him the clear pick in this matchup. If he maintains the level he has shown in his opening two rounds, he should have a strong chance of controlling the match from start to finish.

Backing Taylor Fritz to win in straight sets and cover the -5.5 sets handicap.
