Detroit Lions at Kansas City Chiefs Preview & Picks – Chiefs To Cover In NFL Season Opener

Detroit Lions at Kansas City Chiefs Preview & Picks

Kansas City are tipped to cover as they open with a win.

The Chiefs may have lost some key talent, but this is still a loaded roster with Super Bowl ambitions.

They are backed to lay down an early marker and continue their knack for covering against NFC teams.

  • Kansas City were 5-0-1 ATS vs NFC teams last season
  • Kansas City are 5-1-0 ATS in their last 6 season openers
  • The Under cashed in 8 of Kansas City’s 10 home games last season
  • The Under hit in 3 of Detroit’s 5 games vs AFC teams last season

Head To Head

  • Kansas City Chiefs lead the all-time series 9-5
  • Kansas City Chiefs won 34-30 when the teams last met in September 2019

Detroit Lions Form

Detroit come into the season with high expectations after recording a winning 9-8 season in 2022.

The Lions struggled badly through the first several weeks of the regular season, losing six of their first seven games.

A 15-9 upset of Green Bay in Week 9 proved to be the catalyst for a dramatic upturn, but despite going 8-2 over the final 10 games they missed out on the playoffs.

Detroit did wrap up the season on a positive note though, beating division rivals over the final two weeks.

The Lions blew out Chicago, 41-10, in their home finale, and then travelled to Green Bay to beat the Packers 20-16 in Aaron Rodgers’ final game for the Pack.

Kansas City Chiefs Form

Kansas City enter the 2023 regular season with the aim of winning back-to-back Super Bowls.

The Chiefs dropped a couple of games during the first several weeks of last season, but hit a hot streak after their bye week.

They won nine of their final 10 games to march into the postseason with a 14-3 record, sealing home field advantage for the playoffs.

Kansas City downed Jacksonville 278-20 in the Divisional Round, and then edged Cincinnati 23-20 in a rematch from the previous season’s AFC Championship Game.

That set up a Super Bowl showdown with Philadelphia, and the Chiefs won it 38-35 thanks to Harrison Butker’s 27-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining.
