San Francisco 49ers at Pittsburgh Steelers Preview & Picks – Underdog Steelers To Cover In NFL Opener

San Francisco 49ers at Pittsburgh Steelers Preview & Picks

Pittsburgh are tipped to cover as a home underdog.

San Francisco’s QB question marks are a big red flag, especially against a very good Steelers defense.

And in terms of spread betting, Pittsburgh have been a very reliable pick during the Mike Tomlin era.

  • Pittsburgh Steelers are 9-3-0 ATS in their last 12 games
  • Pittsburgh are 15-6-1 ATS in their last 22 games as a home underdog under Tomlin
  • The Under has cashed in 8 of Pittsburgh’s last 13 games
  • The Under hit in 5 of San Francisco’s 8 road games last season

Head To Head

  • San Francisco 49ers lead the all-time series 12-10
  • San Francisco 49ers won 24-20 when the teams last met in September 2019

San Francisco 49ers Form

San Francisco will have their sights set on a Super Bowl run after injuries derailed them last season.

The 49ers faltered early as they lost four of their first seven games and had starting QB Trey Lance go down with a season-ending injury.

A 31-14 win at the Los Angeles Rams in Week 8 sparked a dramatic turnaround though, and they embarked on a 10-game win streak to close out the regular season and secure a playoff place.

It was not an easy ride for them though, as they then lost Jimmy Garropolo and were forced to lean on a seventh round rookie QB in Brock Purdy.

Purdy did not let them down though, and led them to playoff wins against Seattle (41-23) and Dallas (19-12).

He suffered a season-ending injury in the NFC Championship Game in Philadelphia though, and San Francisco could not overcome another QB loss as they were beaten 31-7.

Pittsburgh Steelers Form

Pittsburgh enter the 2023 campaign looking for a return to the playoffs after a strong finish to the 2022 season.

The Steelers opened with a 23-20 overtime win in Cincinnati, but the wheels quickly came off as they found themselves at 3-7 in late November.

They did produce a late flurry though, winning six of their final seven games in a desperate attempt to steal a postseason berth.

Pittsburgh won 24-17 in Indianapolis and 19-16 at Atlanta, only to suffer a 16-14 home defeat to Baltimore.

That loss to the Ravens was the killer blow to the Steelers’ playoff aspirations, but they did win each of their final four games to finish above .500 at 9-8.
