Champions League Preview - February 24th-25th

Atletico Madrid vs Club Brugge


Another fascinating contest seems likely in Spain after a thrilling 3-3 draw in last week’s first leg in Belgium. Brugge have been a reliable choice for goal backers in the UCL this season, with over 2.5 goals landing in all but one of their last 13 continental fixtures.

Atletico conceded twice in their 4-2 home win against Espanyol last weekend, and I’m banking on another high-scoring contest on Tuesday.

Best Bet: BTTS and Over 2.5 Goals


Inter Milan vs Bodo/Glimt


Bodo/Glimt claimed a sensational 3-1 first-leg victory, and the Norwegians can deliver another BTTS and over 2.5 goals outcome this week.

Kjetil Knutsen’s side have seen BTTS and over 2.5 goals land in nine of their last ten UCL matches. Inter have seen the same outcome in four of their previous six continental fixtures, and I expect more of the same at the San Siro.

Real Madrid vs Benfica


Real Madrid should secure their place in the Round of 16 after a controversial victory in Portugal last week. Vini Jnr was in the spotlight, with the Brazilian bagging a sensational winner before accusing Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni of racially abusing him shortly after the opening goal.

The brilliant winger also found the net in Real’s 2-1 defeat at Osasuna on Saturday, and I expect the highly motivated Brazilian to further punish Benfica this week.

Best Bet: Vini Jnr to Score Anytime


Paris Saint-Germain vs Monaco


PSG showed great character to fight back from two goals down to claim a 3-2 win in last week’s first leg at the Stade Louis II. Another high-scoring outcome should be expected this week.

The Champions League holders have seen over 2.5 goals scored in seven of their last nine matches, while Monaco have seen the same outcome in all but three of their last 13 games. 

Past encounters have followed a similar formula, with PSG conceding in four of their last five wins against Monaco. Both teams should score again this week, with the Parisiens tipped to claim victory in Paris.

Best Bet: PSG to Win/BTTS

Elsewhere, Newcastle should make light work of Qarabag after a dominant 6-1 win in Azerbaijan last week. With victory in the bag, a likely rotated selection should still ease to a comfortable win at St James’s Park.

Leverkusen have one foot in the round of sixteen after a comfortable 2-0 away win against Olympiakos in Greece. The Bundesliga hosts should secure a second-leg victory, with the Greeks in possession of a dismal road record in the UCL.

In Italy, Juventus face a mountainous task as they look to overcome a four-goal deficit against Galatasaray on Wednesday. Goals seem likely as the Old Lady chases an improbable comeback victory in Turin.

Wrapping up the action in Bergamo, Atalanta take on Dortmund with the Italians trailing by two after a limp defeat in Germany last week. A low-scoring outcome seems likely, with BVB expected to secure their safe passage to the round of sixteen.
