Alexandre Pantoja vs Joshua Van Preview & Picks

Alexandre Pantoja is tipped to defend his flyweight title via submission.

Pantoja can cancel out Joshua Van’s power by taking him to the mat, where his constant pressure and ability to control from the top is tipped to result in a submission finish.

  • Alexandre Pantoja has won 5 straight UFC flyweight title fights
  • 10 of Alexandre Pantoja’s last 12 wins have been via submission
  • 20 of Alexandre Pantoja’s 30 career wins have come by stoppage
  • Joshua Van’s 2 previous career defeats were by stoppage

Alexandre Pantoja Form

Alexandre Pantoja is the reigning and defending UFC flyweight champion with a professional record of 30-5 (8 KOs, 12 Subs).

Pantoja debuted in the UFC back in January 2017 and got off to a strong start as he won five of his first six fights.

His climb up the ladder then slowed as he sandwiched a first-round knockout of Matt Schnell with unanimous decision defeats to Deiveson Figueiredo and Askar Askarov, but he has not lost since.

The 35-year-old Brazilian rebounded with a points win over Manel Kape, and backed that up with submission wins over Brandon Royval, in round two, and Alex Perez, in round one.

That earned Pantoja a fight for the flyweight crown and he took his opportunity with a split decision win over Brandon Moreno in July 2023.

‘The Cannibal’ then beat Brandon Royval and Steve Ercej by unanimous decision in his first two defences of the flyweight championship.

He then capped off last year with a second-round submission of Kai Asakura, and in his first defence of the title in June he submitted Kai Kara-France in the third round.

Joshua Van Form

Joshua Van is the number one ranked flyweight contender with a career record of 15-2 (7 KOs, 2 Subs).

Van signed with the UFC 2023 and quickly began to climb the ladder as he won his first three fights, starting with decision wins over Zhalgas Zhumagulov and Kevin Borjas.

He then knocked out Felipe Bunes in the second round for his first stoppage win under the UFC banner, only to then suffer a third-round knockout loss to Charles Johnson last July.

The 24-year-old Burmese fighter quickly put that behind him in the second half of 2024 as he closed out the year by out-pointing Edgar Chavez and Cody Durden.

Van then fought three times in the first six months of 2025 to climb into contention, starting with a decision win over Rei Tsuruya.

He backed that up with a third-round knockout of Bruno Gustavo da Silva in early June, and just three weeks later he returned to the Octagon to beat Brandon Royval on points.

Verdict

Joshua Van has climbed the ladder quickly, but this challenge is a whole new level for him.

Alexandre Pantoja is a on a dominant run as flyweight champion and can maul the challenger for a stoppage win.
