Jack Della Maddalena vs Islam Makhachev Preview & Picks
Islam Makhachev is tipped to win the welterweight title by stoppage.
Makhachev can use his elite wrestling to frustrate and smother Jack Della Maddalena, and take away his striking advantage.
And once the former lightweight champion does get the fight to the mat we expect him to finish it in clinical fashion.
- Islam Makhachev is on a 15-fight win streak
- 8 of Islam Makhachev’s last 9 victories have come via stoppage
- Both of Jack Della Maddalena’s career defeats have been by stoppage
Jack Della Maddalena Form
Jack Della Maddalena is the reigning UFC welterweight champion with a professional record of 18-2 (12 KOs, 2 Subs).
Della Maddalena lost his first two fights when he turned professional in 2016, but he has not lost since.
He entered the UFC with a professional record of 10-2, having enjoyed a successful appearance on Dana White’s Contender Series, and knocked out Pete Rodriguez in less than three minutes in his debut fight in January 2022.
From there the 29-year-old Australian racked up a string of performance awards as he knocked out both Ramazan Emeev and Danny Roberts in the first, before tapping out Randy Brown in the opening period of their fight.
Della Maddalena’s string of stoppage wins ended in the summer of 2023, but the wins did keep coming as he edged Bassl Hafez by split decision.
‘JDM’ won his next fight via the narrowest margin too, downing Kevin Holland by split decision, but his sole outing of 2024 was much more comprehensive.
He finally got the job done inside the distance as he knocked out Gilbert Burns in the third round.
That earned him his first fight for a UFC championship in May of this year, and Della Maddalena took his big chance as he downed Belal Muhammad via unanimous decision.
Islam Makhachev Form
Islam Makhachev is a former UFC lightweight champion with a professional record of 27-1 (5 KOs, 13 Subs).
Makhachev signed with the UFC in 2015 and enjoyed a winning start as he submitted Leo Kuntz in the second round, but he failed to back that up in his next outing as he was knocked out in the first by Adriano Martins.
The 34-year-old Russian has not lost since though, embarking on a 14-fight win streak that has cemented his status as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters on the planet.
He got back on track with unanimous decision wins over Chris Wade and Nik Lentz, before knocking out Gleison Tibau and submitting Kajan Johnson in the first.
Makhachev then earned unanimous decision wins over Arman Tsarukyan and Davi Ramos, before reeling off three consecutive submission wins, stopping Drew Dober in the third, Thiago Moises in the fourth and Dan Hooker in the first.
He then knocked out Bobby Green in the opening period to secure a fight for the vacant lightweight title in late 2022.
Makhachev completed his rise to the summit as he tapped out Charles Oliveira in the second round.
The Russian ace then made back-to-back defences against Alexander Volkanovski, beating the two-time featherweight champion via unanimous decision and first-round knockout.
In his sole defence of 2024 he submitted Dustin Poirier in the final round, and back in January he tapped out Renato Moicano in the first, before relinquishing the title to pursue the welterweight championship.
Verdict
Islam Makhachev is being thrown in at the deep end in his welterweight debut, but we do not expect him to sink.
There is no doubting that trained with 170lb fighters during his stint at lightweight and the added size and strength should boost his tremendous grappling skills even further.
We expect him to get Della Maddalena to the mat and dethrone the champion by finish.
