Valentina Shevchenko Form

Valentina Shevchenko is the defending UFC women’s flyweight champion with a professional record of 25-4 (8 KOs, 7 Subs) with 1 Draw.

Shevchenko debuted in the UFC back in December 2015 and she quickly made an impact by winning three of her first four fights to earn a title shot.

Her sole defeat during that sequence was to Amanda Nunes, via unanimous decision, and when the two women clashed for the bantamweight belt the Russian lost via split decision.

Following that loss ‘Bullet’ moved back to the flyweight division, and it was a move that paid off as she beat Priscila Cachoeira by second-round submission.

Then, in her next fight, Shevchenko claimed the vacant championship by out-pointing Joanna Jedrzejczyk over five rounds.

From there the 37-year-old turned back challenger after challenger, starting with a second-round knockout of Jessica Eye.

She then beat Liz Carmouche via unanimous decision before knocking out Katlyn Chookagian in the third round and out-pointing Jennifer Maia.

Shevchenko’s tear continued as she knocked out Jessica Andrade in the second and Lauren Murphy in the fourth, and reached nine fights as she beat Talia Santos by split decision.

She failed to make it 10-in-a-row, as she was finally dethroned by a fourth-round submission loss to Alexa Grasso, and in the rematch the two women went to a split decision draw.

‘Bullet’ regained the title in the trilogy fight though, beating Grasso via unanimous decision, and back in May she successfully defend the crown with a points win over Manon Fiorot.

Zhang Weili Form

Zhang Weili is a two-time former women’s strawweight champion with a career record of 26-3 (11 KOs, 8 Subs).

Zhang joined the UFC in 2018 and quickly climed the ladder as she won three straight fights, sandwiching a submission success against Jessica Aguilar with points wins over Danielle Taylor and Tecia Torres.

That earned her a fight for the women’s strawweight title in only her fourth fight in the UFC, and she took her big chance by knocking out Jessica Andrade in 42 seconds.

The 36-year-old Chinese fighter made a successful first defence against Joanna Jedrzejczyk, winning on points, but her reign probed to be brief.

Zhang was sensationally knocked out in 78 seconds by Rose Namajunas in her next defence, and then lost the rematch with ‘Thug Rose’ by split decision.

‘Magnum’ rebounded with a second-round knockout of Joanna Jedrzejczyk, and in her next outing she regained the strawweight crown with a second-round submission win over Carla Esparza.

She then went on to make three successful defences of the championship before relinquishing the belt to pursue this title fight.

Zhang reeled off unanimous decision victories over Amanda Lemos, Yan Xiaonan and Tatiana Suarez.

Verdict

Zhang Weili was a dominant force at strawweight, but the move up could be too much for her.

Valentina Shevchenko has dominated this division for several years, bullying opponent after opponent, and we are backing her for another successful defence here.
