Seattle took the NFC West in 2020 but can they successfully fend off the challenge of the San Francisco 49ers and LA Rams to retain their crown in 2021?
NFC West Predictions & Tips: San Francisco 49ers
San Francisco’s 2020 campaign was derailed by injuries. The last time they stayed healthy, in 2019, they made it to the Super Bowl.
They have lost the man behind that incredible 2019 defense, Robert Saleh, and there are questions at QB.
Trey Lance was drafted and while he is behind Jimmy Garropolo in the depth chart at this time, that could conceivably change before Week 1.
But no matter who stars under center, this is a talented 49ers team that appears to have a pretty soft schedule.
A 10-win season is very achievable - if San Francisco can stay healthy - and if they can get to double figures, they will have a great shot to win the division.
NFC West Predictions & Tips: Los Angeles Rams
The defense has been the crown jewel of the Los Angeles Rams in recent seasons, but they have been dealt a few blows in the offseason.
Cam Akers is one of several notable talents to move on and they have also lost co-ordinator Brandon Staley to the Chargers.
Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey are still on the roster though, and this is still a strong group.
Plus, the onus is not all on the defense this year after the Rams made a major upgrade at quarterback, replacing Jared Goff with Matthew Stafford.
Unlike his time in Detroit, Stafford will be surrounded by weapons in the passing game in the form of Cooper Kupp, DeSean Jackson and Robert Woods.
He should provide more of a spark for an offense that went off the rails in the second half of the 2018 season and never seemed to recover.
An excellent QB, plenty of weapons, a tough defense and an excellent head coach should ensure the Rams contend for the NFC West in 2021.
NFC West Predictions & Tips: Seattle Seahawks
Seattle appeared to be in danger of losing Russell Wilson early in the offseason, until Pete Carroll told Chicago to take a walk.
Keeping Wilson was huge for the Seahawks and is the biggest reason they are not at longer odds.
Seattle were also able to hold onto Tyler Lockett and Chris Carson, and DK Metcalf will also return in 2021, so there are weapons.
Defensively there are question marks about a franchise once known for it’s ‘Legion of Boom’.
They did improve during the second half of last year though, so if they can continue in that trajectory things are looking good form them.
And if they do have a few ‘bad days’, Wilson and that offense are capable of picking up the slack so Seattle retaining the crown is not out of the question.
NFC West Predictions & Tips: Arizona Cardinals
Arizona’s early season promise in 2020 fizzled out as they ended the season on a 3-6 run that ruled them out of the postseason.
Kyler Murray showed flashes of brilliance, including that incredible last-gasp Hail Mary in the win over Buffalo.
He will have DeAndre Hopkins and AJ Green to toss the ball to this time around, and if JJ Watt stays healthy this defense just got a shot in the arm.
But will this be enough to launch a challenge for the NFC West crown? The bookies don’t think so and I tend to agree.
Verdict
A major upgrade at quarterback and a tough defense could lead LA to their first NFC West title since 2018.
San Francisco’s inability to stay healthy in recent seasons is a dark cloud hanging over them, so if anyone can deny the Rams, it could be Wilson and the Seahawks.
