The Islanders opened the season with back-to-back defeats, losing 5-4 in overtime at home to Utah before suffering a 3-0 shutout defeat in Dallas.
They finally got off the mark with a 6-2 victory in Colorado, but they failed to back that up as they then moved on to St Louis to lose 1-0 in overtime.
New York responded to that loss with a shootout victory over Montreal at home, but they again failed to follow up a win.
This time the Islanders were shutout as they were beaten 1-0 at home by Detroit.
New Jersey Devils Form
New Jersey return home looking to snap a three-game losing skid that has left them 5-4-1.
The Devils got off to a strong start as they won five of their first seven games, starting with 4-1 and 3-1 wins over Buffalo.
They then rebounded from a 4-2 loss to Toronto with a 5-3 win in Washington and a 3-0 victory at home to Utah, only to then lose 4-2 when they visited Carolina.
New Jersey rebounded immediately from that loss, winning 3-1 in Ottawa, but they have not won since.
The Devils dropped back-to-back games at home, 6-5 to Washington in overtime and 8-5 to Tampa Bay in regulation, before losing 5-3 in Detroit.
Verdict
New Jersey have been a mess defensively over the past few games, and that makes the Islanders an appealing underdog in this one.
