Brian Norman Jr Form
Brian Norman Jr is the defending WBO world welterweight champion with a career record of 28-0 (22 KOs) with 2 No Contests.
Norman Jr made his professional debut in January 2018 and went unbeaten in his first 24 professional fights to earn a shot at a minor WBO championship.
The 24-year-old American won that fight, earning a unanimous decision win over Quinton Randall to claim the championship in November 2023.
His first defence did not go exactly to plan though, as his bout with Janelson Figueroa Bocachica ended prematurely after the challenger suffered a cut due to an accidental clash of heads.
Norman Jr rebounded in his next outing though, as he knocked out Giovani Santillan in the 10th round in May 2024 to win the vacant interim WBO welterweight championship.
‘The Assassin II’ was later upgraded to full world title status, and in his first defence he made quick work of Derrieck Cuevas, knocking him out in the third round back in March.
He then backed up that victory with another successful defence in June, as he took out Jin Sasaki in the fifth round in Japan.
Devin Haney Form
Devin Haney is a former world lightweight and super-lightweight champion with a professional record of 32-0 (15 KOs) and 1 No Contest.
Haney debuted in December 2015 and quickly climbed the ladder, winning a string of minor titles in the lightweight division.
That earned him his first world title fight in September 2019, and he took his big chance as he stopped Zaur Abdullaev in the fourth round to claim the interim WBC lightweight crown.
The 27-year-old American went on to make a string of successful defences, starting with a unanimous decision win over Alfredo Santiago.
Haney then out-pointed Yuriorkis Gamboa, Jorge Linares, Joseph Diaz Jr to set up a fight for the undisputed lightweight crown.
He cleaned up the division with a points win over George Kambosos Jr in Australia, and later that year went back ‘Down Under’ to beat the Australian via unanimous decision in their rematch.
‘The Dream’ then made one successful defence of his undisputed crown, beating Vasiliy Lomachenko on points, before moving up to super-lightweight in late 2023.
Haney marked his debut at the weight with a unanimous decision win over Regis Prograis to claim the WBC title, only to then suffer a controversial knockout defeat to Ryan Garcia in April of last year.
The title was not on the line after Garcia failed to make weight, and the result was later overturned to a No Contest when Garcia failed a drug test.
Haney put that disappointing and controversial night behind him in May, when out-pointed Jose Ramirez in Times Square.
Verdict
Brian Norman Jr has been on a tear, but this is a massive step up in quality from those he has faced up to this point.
Devin Haney is a skilled fighter who knows how to stay elusive and pick apart an opponent over 12 rounds, and we expect to see that happen here.
