David Benavidez vs Anthony Yarde Preview & Picks
David Benavidez vs Anthony Yarde Preview & Picks
David Benavidez is tipped to retain the WBC light heavyweight title by knockout.
Anthony Yarde is known to fade in the second half of fights, so we expect Benavidez to fight smart, use his reach advantage to dictate range and pick apart Yarde before stopping him.
- David Benavidez is unbeaten in 30 professional fights
- 24 of David Benavidez’s 30 career wins have been via knockout
- Anthony Yarde has been knocked out 2 times in his career
- Both of Anthony Yarde’s KO defeats came between rounds 7-12
David Benavidez Form
David Benavidez is the reigning and defending WBC world light-heavyweight champion with a professional record of 30-0 (24 KOs).
Benavidez made his professional debut in August 2013 and wasted little time in climbing the super-middleweight ladder to earn a world title fight in September 2017.
He took his first big chance with a split decision win over Ronald Gavril, but his reign proved to be brief as he won the rematch the following year, only to be stripped of the title due to a failed drug test.
The 28-year-old American returned with a second-round knockout of J’Leon Love, and then regained the title with a ninth-round knockout of Anthony Dirrell in September 2019.
Benavidez was stripped of his title after failing to make weight for the 10th round stoppage of Roamer Alexis Angulo, but he put that disappointment behind him by stopping Ronald Ellis in the 11th and Kryone Davis in the seventh.
He then won the interim WBC title with a third-round stoppage of David Lemeiux, and from there he retained the interim crown twice, beating Caleb Plant on points and Demetrius Andrade by sixth-round stoppage.
That did not result in him getting a full world title fight, and last year he made a successful transition to light-heavyweight.
‘El Bandera Roja’ beat Oleksandr Gvozdyk by unanimous decision to win the interim WBC championship in his debut at the weight.
Benavidez then successfully retained that championship with a points win over David Morrell, before later being upgraded to full championship status.
Anthony Yarde Form
Anthony Yarde is a long-time light-heavyweight contender with a professional record of 27-3 (24 KOs).
Yarde entered the professional ranks in May 2015 and quickly stormed into European title contention with a string of stoppage wins.
He claimed the European crown in July 2017 when he knocked out Richard Baranyi in the first, and from there he made a string of successful defences to force his way into world title contention.
The 34-year-old Englishman failed to take his big chance though, as he was knocked out by Sergey Kovalev in the 11th round.
Yarde put that behind him with a second-round knockout of Diego Jair Ramirez and a sixth-round stoppage of Dec Spelman, only to then suffer a split decision defeat when he faced Lydon Arthur for the Commonwealth championship.
‘The Beast from the East’ rebounded with a first-round knockout of Alex Theran, and then won his rematch with Arthur in emphatic fashion, scoring a fourth-round stoppage success.
He then earned another world title fight when he stopped Stefani Koykov in the third, but again came up short on the big stage as he was knocked out in round eight by Artur Beterbiev.
Yarde has not lost since though, knocking out Jorge Silva in the second and Marko Nikolic in the third, before beating Ralfs Vilcans in points.
Then, earlier this year, he made it four-in-a-row with a unanimous decision win over Arthur in their trilogy fight.
Verdict
Anthony Yarde poses a threat with his power, but we have repeatedly seen him come up short on the biggest of stages.
He has been stopped in both of those fights too, and we expect more of the same as David Benavidez proves to be a level above his challenger.
