Derek Chisora vs Deontay Wilder Preview & Picks

Derek Chisora is tipped to beat former world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.

Wilder has looked hesitant in his last few outings against good competition, and Chisora is not going to stand at range and give him chances to throw big ‘bombs’.

We expect Chisora to get in close, bully Wilder and get the job done on the scorecards.

  • Derek Chisora is a on a 3-fight win streak
  • Derek Chisora’s previous 4 wins have all come on points
  • 7 of Derek Chisora’s last 8 fights have gone the distance
  • Deontay Wilder has not won back-to-back fights since 2019

Derek Chisora Form

Derek Chisora is a former world heavyweight title challenger with a professional record of 36-13 (23 KOs).

Chisora won British and Commonwealth titles during his rise up the heavyweight ladder, and in February 2012 he fought for a world title for the first time, losing to Vitali Klitschko on points.

He rebounded from that loss with a five-fight win streak that included a European title victory, only to see his run end when he was stopped in the 10th round by Tyson Fury in November 2024.

The now 42-year-old again responded with a five-bout win streak, but his career stalled between May 2016 and November 2017 as he lost three times in a five-fight spell, with many speculating that would be the end of his career.

Chisora kept fighting though and recorded back-to-back wins, only to then suffer an 11th round knockout loss at the hands of Dillian Whyte in December 2018.

‘War’ responded with a points win over Senad Gashi, and then knocked out Artur Szpilka in the second and David Price in the fourth to set up a high-profile showdown with Oleksander Usyk.

He lost that fight via unanimous decision, and then went on to suffer back-to-back points losses to Joseph Parker, before finally avenging a previous loss to Kubrat Pulev with a split decision victory in July 2022.

That earned Chisora one more crack at world championship glory, but his attempt ended in failure as he was knocked out in 10 rounds by Tyson Fury.

He has been on a roll since then though, racking up unanimous decision victories over Gerald Washington, Joe Joyce and Otto Wallin.

Deontay Wilder Form

Deontay Wilder is a former WBC world heavyweight champion with a professional record of 44-4 (43 KOs) with 1 draw.

Wilder made his professional debut in late 2008 and tore through the domestic scene in the United States with 32 consecutive knockout wins to earn a shot at a world title.

‘The Bronze Bomber’ took his big shot too as he went the distance for the first time in his career, out-pointing Bermane Stiverne over 12 rounds in January 2015 to claim the WBC belt.

He immediately returned to fight-finishing ways in his first defence, knocking out Eric Molina in the ninth, and that sparked a dominant run as champion that saw him make seven successful defences, all via stoppage.

Wilder’s perfect run was finally brought to an end in December 2018 when he faced Tyson Fury in Los Angeles – although he did retain the title.

The 40-year-old was out-boxed throughout by Fury, but a couple of late knockdowns helped him escape with a split decision draw.

He would not be so fortunate in the rematch though, as he was dominated and knocked out inside seven rounds, and in the trilogy fight he was against beaten by Fury, this time by 11th round knockout.

Wilder got back to winning ways in October 2022 as he took out Robert Helenius in the first round, but it would be almost three years before he would win again.

The American heavyweight was out-pointed by Joseph Parker in December 2023, and then in June 2024 he suffered a fifth-round knockout loss at the hands of Zhilei Zhang.

He did get back to winning ways last June though, as he knocked out Tyrrell Anthony Herndon in the seventh round.

Chisora vs Wilder - What They Said

Derek Chisora: “I am taking it seriously. It’s the last fight, number 50. Right now we’re just happy to be in the same room hanging out with each other. But when he arrives in April for that first press conference, it’s done. The friendship is out the window. Then after four, five, six rounds, when we hug and shake, we’ll be back as brothers.”

Deontay Wilder: “I believe in divine timing. Some of the best boxing fans in the world live here. We have the O2 Arena, Derek Chisora, and I’m looking forward to this. I need it. I need Derek more than he needs me. I’ve been broken down and built back up all over again… and I’m looking forward to it. This is a must-win for me. Not only a win but I need a devastating win. I need a knockout. That’s what people come to see.”

Verdict

Deontay Wilder’s punching power will always give him a chance, but it feels like the Tyson Fury fights did more than just physical damage.

‘The Bronze Bomber’ has not been the same since those nights – he is still hung up on those losses years later – and Chisora can take advantage with a typically gritty performance.
