Sebastian Fundora vs Keith Thurman Predictions & Picks

Sebastian Fundora is tipped to retain his WBC super-welterweight title via late stoppage.

Fundora boasts a massive size advantage over Keith Thurman, and he combines that with high volume punching and plenty of power.

That spells trouble for the challenger, who is fighting for only the third time since 2019.

  • Sebastian Fundora is on a 3-fight win streak
  • 15 of Sebastian Fundora’s 23 career wins have come via stoppage
  • Keith Thurman has fought just twice since July 2019
  • Sebastian Fundora as an 8” height advantage
  • Sebastian Fundora has an 11” reach advantage

Sebastian Fundora Form

Sebastian Fundora is the reigning and defending WBC super-welterweight champion with a career record of 23-1 (15 KOs) with 1 draw.

Fundora made his professional debut in September 2016 and went unbeaten in his first 19 fights – with the only blemish being a draw with Jamontay Clark in the summer 2019.

He rebounded from that setback with a five-fight win streak that earned him a fight for the interim WBC title in April 2022.

The 28-year-old American took his opportunity, as he stopped Erickson Lubin in nine rounds to leave Las Vegas with the belt.

Fundora successfully defended the interim crown six months later, out-pointing Carlos Ocampo over 12 rounds, but he surrendered that title in April 2023 when he was knocked out in the seventh round by Brian Mendoza.

‘The Towering Inferno’ quickly put his first loss behind him though – earning the WBO and WBC super-welterweight titles with a split decision victory over Tim Tszyu in March 2024.

A year later he retained those titles with a fourth-round knockout of Chordale Booker, and in July of last year he enjoyed a successful defence of the WBC belt, stopping Tszyu in the seventh round in their rematch.

Keith Thurman Form

Keith Thurman is a former welterweight world champion with a professional record of 31-1 (23 KOs) with 1 No Contest.

Thurman entered the pro ranks in November 2007 and went unbeaten in his first 21 fights to earn a shot at the interim WBA welterweight crown in July 2013.

He knocked out Diego Chaves is the 10th round to claim that belt, and then went on to stop Jesus Soto Karass in the ninth and Julio Diaz in the third to retain the interim crown.

The 37-year-old American then beat Leonard Bundo on points, before being upgraded to ‘regular’ champion status by the WBA.

Thurman sandwiched a seventh-round stoppage of Luis Collazo with points wins over Robert Guerrero and Shawn Porter to retain the belt, and following that win over ‘Showtime’ he was given ‘super’ champion status by the government body.

In his first official defence of a full world title he beat Danny Garcia by split decision, adding the WBC belt in the process, and that was followed by a majority decision win over Josesito Lopez in January 2019.

‘One Time’ saw his world title reign end in July 2019 though, as he dropped a split decision to Manny Pacquiao, and since then he has stepped inside the boxing ring just twice.

He rebounded from his first career defeat with a unanimous decision victory over Mario Barrios in February 2022, and in March of last year he knocked out Brock Jarvis in the third round.

What They Said – Fundora vs Thurman

Sebastian Fundora. “I’m just looking at Keith as another fight. I have to go make the ring mine and make this fight mine as well. I’m the younger guy and I’m the champion – lots of things favour me in this fight. You can’t just rely on that of course, but I’m extremely confident and more matured at this point in my career. I have to expect the best Keith Thurman to come out – that’s what we’re training for. Whether he brings it or not, that’s not up to me, but I’ll be ready.”

Keith Thurman: “Great champions become champions again and you can’t stop a champion from rising to the top. I’ve got several more tangos left in me and that’s what March 28 is all about. I’m back in the spotlight and ready to showcase my talents. Fundora is starting to get better and better… but it takes a fight like this to really reach the highest level. That’s what makes great champions. I’m healthy and I’m ready to get in the ring and swing.”

Verdict

Keith Thurman has barely fought since that loss to Manny Pacquiao almost seven years ago, and now he faces a giant of a man who combines skill with volume punching and power.

Sebastian Fundora may have to ride out an early storm, but as the fight wears on we expect him to take over, break Thurman down, and become the first man to stop ‘One Time’.
