San Francisco came into this series with San Diego on the back of a win, but having lost their eight outings.
The Giants won five of their first seven games in August, only to see their form drop off following a 5-0 victory over Washington, starting with 4-2 and 8-0 defeats to the Nationals.
They were then swept at home by San Diego, losing 4-1, 5-1 and 11-1 to the Padres, before losing the first two games of the series with Tampa Bay, 7-6 and 2-1.
San Francisco rallied to win the final meeting with the Rays, 7-1, and then backed that up with a 4-3 victory in the opening game of this series with San Diego.
However, the Giants failed to keep that win sequence going, as they dropped the next two meetings with the Padres, 5-1 and 8-1.

San Diego returned home having been swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers last weekend, but they had won nine of their previous 15 games.
The Padres began August by sandwiching an 8-5 loss to St Louis with 4-1 and 7-3 wins over the Cardinals, before heading to Arizona where they rebounded from a 6-2 loss with 10-5 and 3-2 wins.
They then bounced back from a 10-2 defeat to the Red Sox with 5-1 and 6-2 victories, before travelling to San Francisco to sweep the Giants, winning 4-1, 5-1 and 11-1 wins.
San Diego's run was ended as they lost 3-2, 6-0 and 5-4 to the Dodgers, and their losing skid then reached four games as they lost 4-3 to San Francisco.
The Padres have got back on track since however, following up a 5-1 victory over the Giants with an 8-1 success last night.
Verdict
San Diego have rebounded from their recent stumble with a couple of convincing wins.
So with momentum firmly on their side, we are expecting a third win for the Padres in this series with San Francisco.
