Julianna Pena vs Kayla Harrison Preview & Picks
Kayla Harrison is tipped to claim the women’s bantamweight title.
Harrison is the stronger and faster fighter, and her elite judo skills will help her smother and frustrate Julianna Pena over five rounds.
- Kayla Harrison is 2-0 since moving to bantamweight
- 3 of Kayla Harrison’s last 4 fights have gone the distance
- 2 of Julianna Pena’s 3 UFC title fights have heard the final bell
Julianna Pena Form
Julianna Pena is the reigning UFC women’s bantamweight champion with a career record of 12-5 (3 KOs, 5 Subs).
Pena made her UFC debut back in 2023 and enjoyed a successful debut as she knocked out Jessica Rakoczy in the first round to win the Ultimate Fighter tournament.
She backed that up with two more wins in 2015 as she knocked out Milana Dudieva in the first round and beat Jessica Eye on points, and in her sole outing of 2016 she claimed a decision win over Cat Zingano.
Her perfect UFC run finally came to an end in early 2017 as she was submitted by Valentina Shevchenko, and it would be over two years before she fought again.
Pena enjoyed a successful return, beating Nicco Montano via decision, only to then lose via submission when she faced Germaine de Randamie in her only fight in 2020.
The 35-year-old Venezuelan rebounded quickly with a third-round submission of Sara McMann, and that earned her a shot at the womens’ bantamweight title in December 2021.
She shocked the world as she submitted Amanda Nunes in the second round, only to surrender that title the following July as she lost to ‘The Lioness’ by decision.
Pena spent two years on the sidelines after that loss, but when she returned last October she reclaimed the women’s bantamweight title with a split decision success against Raquel Pennington.
Kayla Harrison Form
Kayla Harrison is a former two-time PFL lightweight tournament champion with a professional record of 18-1 (6 KOs, 7 Subs).
Harrison crossed over to mixed martial arts in 2018 following a historic career as a judo player that saw her win Olympic and World Championship gold.
She debuted with the PFL promotion and quickly reeled off a string of stoppage victories before entering her first tournament in 2019.
She beat Larissa Pacheco via unanimous decision to win that tournament, and two years later claimed the crown for the second time with a second-round submission of Taylor Guardado.
Harrison’s bid to become a three-time winner ended in disappointment as she lost on points to Pacheco in the 2022 final, but she rebounded the following year with a points win over Aspen Ladd.
The 34-year-old American then made her long-awaited UFC debut in the first half of April, making an immediate splash as she beat former champion Holly Holm via second-round submission.
Harrison backed up that victory in October, as she beat Ketlen Vieira on points to earn this shot at the women’s bantamweight crown.
Verdict
Kayla Harrison has been extremely active over the past couple of years and is looking sharp and hungry for success.
Julianna Pena, on the other hand, continues to go on long absences from the Octagon, so we are expecting the stronger and faster Harrison to get the job done.
