Head To Head

- Dustin Poirier won by 1st round submission when the two men fought in February 2012
Max Holloway Form
Max Holloway is a former UFC featherweight champion with a career record of 26-8 (12 KOs, 2 Subs).
Holloway entered the UFC after just four professional fights, but was given a baptism of fire as he was submitted by Dustin Poirier in the first round of his debut fight in February 2021.
He rallied from that defeat though, and between January 2014 and December 2019 he went on a sensational run that saw him reach the top of the featherweight division.
The 33-year-old Hawaiian earned a shot at the interim title by reeling off nine consecutive victories, and he claimed the belt by knocking out Anthony Pettis in the third round.
Holloway then completed his rise to the top of the division with back-to-back third-round knockout wins over the legendary Jose Aldo, before stopping Brian Ortega in the fourth round.
‘Blessed’s attempt to become a two-weight champion then ended in failure as he lost an interim lightweight title fight to Dustin Poirier by decision, but he made a quick return to winning ways as he successfully defended his featherweight crown against Frankie Edgar.
That decision win proved to be his final victory as champion though, as he dropped back-to-back decisions to Alexander Volkanovski.
He earned himself a rematch with Volkanovski by out-pointing Calvin Katter and Yair Rodriguez, but he again came up short against the champion, losing via unanimous decision.
Holloway responded with a points victory over Arnold Allen, and then knocked out The Korean Zombie in the third and Justin Gaethje in the fifth to earn another title fight.
He again came up short though, as he was knocked out in the third round by featherweight champion Ilia Topuria.
Dustin Poirier Form
Dustin Poirier is a former interim lightweight champion with a professional record of 30-9 (15 KOs, 8 Subs) and 1 No Contest.
Poirier made his UFC debut back in 2011 following the absorption of the WEC promotion, and went 8-2 in his first 10 fights for the promotion.
His run at featherweight ended in late 2014, as he responded to a first-round knockout loss to Conor McGregor by moving up to lightweight.
It was a decision that paid off quickly as he knocked out Carlos Diego Ferreira and Yancy Medeiros, before beating Joseph Duffy on points.
Poirier then knocked out Bobby Green in the first round, before seeing his run end with a first-round knockout loss to Michael Johnson.
The 36-year-old rebounded with a decision win over Jim Miller, only to see his next fight end in a No Contest after Eddie Alvarez rocked him with an illegal knee while he was downed.
‘Diamond’ wasted little time in getting back to winning ways and claimed an interim lightweight title shot as he submitted Anthony Pettis in the third, before knocking out Justin Gaethje in the fourth and Eddie Alvarez in the second.
He then claimed the interim 155lb crown by beating Max Holloway via unanimous decision in April 2019.
Poirier failed to become full champion as he was submitted by Khabib Nurmagomedov, but he rallied to out-point Dan Hooker and then win back-to-back meetings with Conor McGregor via TKO.
That earned him another title fight, but he again failed to become lightweight champion as he was submitted in the third round by Charles Oliveira.
He bounced back by tapping out Michael Chandler in the third, and then rebounded from a KO loss to Justin Gaethje with a second-round knockout of Benoit Saint Denis.
Poirier again failed to string together wins though, as he was submitted in the final round by Islam Makhachev in a fight for the lightweight title last June.
Verdict
I am always wary of backing a fighter who has one foot out of the exit door, but it is tough to look past Poirier’s record against Holloway.
He is the better and more efficient boxer of the two men, and he does have the home crowd on his side, so we are backing ‘Diamond’ to get the job done on points.
