United States vs New Zealand Preview & Picks

The United States are tipped to cover a large spread as they open with a win.

A highly-successful coach and a loaded roster of NBA stars is likely to be too much for New Zealand.

  • United States are on a 5-game win streak
  • New Zealand are 1-4 in their last 5 games
  • New Zealand failed to cover in a 31-point loss to Canada this month
  • The last 2 meetings produced under 185.5 total points

Head To Head

  • The United States lead the series 2-0 since 2002
  • The United States won 98-71 when the teams last met in September 2014

United States Form

The United States come into the FIBA World Cup on a good run of form, having won five straight games.

The Americans started 2023 with an 83-76 defeat to Brazil in World Cup qualifying, but that loss did not prevent them from advancing to this tournament.

They bounced back from that loss in their opening warm-up game, blowing out Puerto Rico in a 117-74 victory.

The United States then followed that up with a 92-62 victory over Slovenia and a 98-88 success against Spain.

Steve Kerr’s team then took their win streak to five games as they downed Greece 108-86 and then beat Germany 99-91.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand go into their opening World Cup game on a three-game losing skid and having lost four of the seven games they have played in 2023.

They started the year with back-to-back wins, beating Saudi Arabia 110-63 and Lebanon 106-91 to secure their place in the tournament.

The Tall Blacks failed to win their opening warm-up game earlier this month though, suffering a 79-72 defeat to Japan.

New Zealand avenged that loss quickly with a 94-75 win over the Japanese two days later, but they have not won since.

They suffered a heavy 107-76 defeat to Canada, before losing 69-68 to China and 88-81 to Italy.

Verdict

The United States are odds-on favourites to win it all and are many levels above New Zealand.

This is set to be straightforward outing for Steve Kerr’s team, with a win and cover the likely outcome.
