Florida Panthers at Edmonton Oilers Preview & Picks
Edmonton are tipped to draw first blood as these teams meet in the Stanley Cup Finals for the second year running.
The Oilers have been in excellent form on the home ice in the postseason, with star men Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl taking their game to another level.
- Edmonton Oilers are 6-1 at home in the playoffs
- Edmonton Oilers were 2-1 when hosting Florida in last year’s Stanley Cup Finals
- Florida Panthers are 1-2 in visits to Canada during the 2025 playoffs so far
- The Over has cashed in 6 of the previous 7 meetings
Head To Head
- Edmonton Oilers lead the all-time series 26-22-3
- Florida Panthers won 4-3 when the two teams last met on February 27
Florida Panthers Form
Florida enter the Stanley Cup Finals having won 12 of their 17 playoff games to eliminate Tampa Bay, Toronto and Carolina.
The Panthers finished the regular season with a 47-31-4 record, placing just third in the Atlantic Division, but they were seemingly saving their best for when it mattered most.
They made a fast start to the playoffs as they won 6-2 and 2-0 at Tampa Bay, before responding to a 5-1 defeat with series-clinching 4-2 and 6-3 wins over the Lightning.
Florida failed to repeat that fast start in the second round as they travelled to Toronto and lost 5-4 and 4-3 to the Maple Leafs.
The Panthers rebounded at home though, winning 5-4 in overtime and 2-0 in regulation, before edging ahead in the series for the first time with a 6-1 victory on the road.
They failed to clinch at home, losing 2-0 to the Maple Leafs, but they held their nerve in Game 7 as they went back out on the road to win 6-1 in Toronto.
Florida backed up that victory as they raced out to a three-game lead in the Eastern Conference Finals.
The Panthers reeled off 5-2 and 5-0 victories in Carolina, before returning home to down the Hurricanes 6-2.
They missed out on a series sweep as they were beaten 3-0 in Game 4, but they put that behind them when they headed back to Carolina to clinch the series with a 5-3 victory.
Edmonton Oilers Form
Edmonton go into this Stanley Cup Finals rematch with Florida having gone 12-4 while eliminating Los Angeles, Vegas and Dallas.
The Oilers also finished third in their division, going 48-29-5, but just like the Panthers they have upped their game in the postseason.
They made a rough start as they dropped back-to-back games in Los Angeles, 6-5 and 6-2, but they responded by winning the next four meetings to advance, taking them 7-4, 4-3 (OT), 3-1 and 6-4.
Edmonton kept that run going as they made a much stronger start to the second round, downing Vegas 4-2 in regulation and 5-4 in overtime on the road.
The Oilers then responded to a 4-3 home loss with a 3-0 victory, before heading back to ‘Sin City’ to clinch the series with a 1-0 overtime win.
They then lost their opening game of the Western Conference Finals series with Dallas, 6-3, but once again responded strongly to a postseason setback.
Edmonton levelled the series with a 3-0 victory in Texas, before heading back home to take control with 6-1 and 4-1 victories at Rogers Place.
That gave the Oilers the chance to clinch on the road in Game 5, and they did just that as they downed the Stars 6-3 to set up this rematch of last year’s Stanley Cup Finals.
Verdict
This has all the makings of a classic series that goes the distance, just like a year ago.
Edmonton have done an excellent job of defending their home ice in the playoffs so far, and did go 2-1 when hosting Florida a year ago, so we lean towards the Oilers in Game 1.
