Latvia vs Canada Preview & Picks

Canada are backed to cover as they make it two wins from two games.

The Canadians have dominated the Latvians over the years, and after a solid first showing we expect more of the same.

  • Canada have won 9 of the last 10 World Championship meetings with Latvia
  • Canada out-scored Latvia 10-2 across the two meetings at the 2023 tournament
  • 13 of the last 16 meetings have produced over 5.5 total goals

Head To Head

  • Canada lead the series 16-1 since 2003
  • Canada won 4-2 when the two teams last met in May 2023

Latvia Form

Latvia entered this tournament looking to at least go one better than 2024, when they narrowly missed out on a place in the knockout stage.

They won their first three games of the tournament, but when the opposition got tougher the results dipped.

The Latvians won just one of their remaining four games, resulting in a fourth-place finish, three points behind a Slovakia team they did manage to beat.

They warmed up for this competition by playing a string of exhibition games in April and early May.

Latvia’s most notable performances were the 3-2 victory over Finland on April 9, and the 3-2 success against Switzerland on April 24.

Canada Form

Canada go into their second game of the Ice Hockey World Championship looking to maintain a 100% record.

They opened the tournament against Slovenia on Saturday, and ran out 4-0 winners to get off to a flying start.

Of course, the Canadians are looking to regain the trophy they surrendered 12 months ago.

They lifted the silverware in 2023, beating Germany 5-2 in the final, but they were dethroned the following year.

Canada’s quest for back-to-back crowns was ended by a 3-2 semi-final defeat to Switzerland, and they then lost 4-2 to Sweden in the third place game.

Verdict

Canada lived up to their pre-tournament billing as they made light work of Slovenia.

We expect another comfortable performance from them here, as they make it back-to-back wins to start the competition.
