Latvia Form
Latvia fell at the first hurdle a year ago as they lost four of their six group stage games.
They were beaten 4-2 by the United States in their tournament opener and then lost 2-1 to Finland as they faced a tough early schedule.
The Latvians got off the mark in their third outing with Norway, winning 3-2, only to then suffer a heavy 5-1 defeat to the Czech Republic.
Latvia bounced back quickly with a couple of 4-3 wins over Austria and Great Britain to stay in the qualification hunt.
However, they were subsequently eliminated by a 1-0 defeat to Sweden in their final group outing.
Canada Form
Canada missed out on back-to-back world championships as they were beaten in the final a year ago.
The Maple Leafs started their defence of the crown with a couple of convincing wins, beating Italy 6-1 and Slovakia 5-1.
They then overcame early scares to down Kazakhstan 6-3, and then beat Switzerland by the same score to improve to 4-0.
Canada suffered a shock 3-2 defeat to Denmark in their next outing, but rebounded in style with a 7-1 hammering of France.
The Canadians then edged Sweden 4-3 in overtime in the quarter-finals before crushing the Czech Republic 6-1 in the semis.
However, they could not complete their mission, losing 4-3 in overtime to Finland in the final.
Verdict
Canada are a leading contender to win it all and they are backed to flex their muscles in the tournament opener.
