Machac’s Stop-Start Life Continues

Tomas Machac returns to action after an injury setback, having been forced to retire from his most recent match in the opening round at Montpellier.

The Czech has become somewhat accustomed to stop-start campaigns, dealing with recurring physical issues throughout his career.

Even in 2025, he was forced to retire from matches on six occasions, highlighting the ongoing challenge of staying fully fit on tour.

Nevertheless, he arrives in decent form and with confidence from a solid start to the year, which included a title run in Adelaide last month and a third-round appearance at the Australian Open.

His previous visit to Doha, however, offered little encouragement, as his only appearance here in 2023 ended in the final round of qualifying.

Sinner Targets Strong Reset in Doha

Jannik Sinner should be highly motivated after a below-par January by his lofty standards, with losses to Carlos Alcaraz in an exhibition and to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semifinals, where he had been the two-time defending champion.

Expect the Italian to arrive in Doha eager to reset his season and make an immediate statement. Interestingly, Sinner has chosen Doha as the venue to restart his campaign despite never having played the event before.

His previous Middle East swing appearances came in 2021 and 2022 in Dubai, where he performed well on both occasions, reaching the quarterfinals each time and showing comfort in the region’s conditions.

Despite falling short of the Australian Open title, Sinner’s numbers over the past three to four seasons still mark him out as one of the most dominant hard-court players on tour.

His consistency early in tournaments has been particularly striking, with the Italian not losing a first-round match on any surface since the Cincinnati Masters in 2023.

Verdict

Jannik Sinner comes in hungry for a strong rebound, which only makes him more dangerous in this opener. He’s a clear favorite on paper, and a focused performance should see him get the job done in straight sets while covering the handicap games comfortably.
