Houston enter the new season looking to better a 2025 campaign that saw them go 5-5 to narrowly miss out on the playoffs.
The Gamblers – who competed as the Roughnecks last year – made a slow start to the season as they lost three of their first four games.
They rallied with back-to-back wins to get back to .500, only to then cool off with a couple of wins to effectively see their postseason ambitions end.
Houston did at least finish the regular season on a positive note, winning their final two games to end the campaign at .500.
In the wake of that failed season, the Roughnecks were rebranded as the Gamblers, with Kevin Sumlin replacing Curtis Johnson as head coach.
Dallas Renegades Form
Dallas also come into the 2026 campaign having narrowly missed out on the postseason with a .500 record.
The Renegades were one of the XFL teams to enter the UFL as part of the merger, and they came into the new league on the back of a championship-winning campaign in 2024.
They made a solid start to life in the UFL too as they won three of their first four games, but the wheels came off at the end of April and they lost four games in a row.
Dallas rallied to win their final two regular season matchups on the road, but their 5-5 record was not enough to earn a postseason berth.
The Renegades – who have rebranded from Arlington to Dallas – underwent one big change in the offseason, with Rick Neuheisel succeeding Bob Stoops as head coach.
Verdict
These two teams have gone head-to-head in each of the past two seasons, and it has not been pretty.
Defenses dominated in both of those encounters, and given that this is Week 1 and teams will need some time to really gel, we could see another low-scoring clash here.
