Canelo Alvarez vs Jaime Munguia Preview & Picks
Canelo Alvarez is tipped to retain his undisputed title on points.
Canelo is the more calculated and accurate man, and his accuracy is coupled energy-sapping power.
We expect him to deal with Jaime Munguia’s aggression early and then take over the contest.
- Canelo Alvarez has won 11 of his last 12 fights
- Canelo has won each of his last 7 fights at super-middleweight
- Alvarez’s last 4 fights have all gone the distance
- Canelo Alvarez has won 21 of his 25 fights that went the distance
Canelo Alvarez Form
Canelo Alvarez is the undisputed super-middleweight champion with a professional record of 60-2-2 (39 KOs).
Alvarez has won 11 of his 12 fights since the split decision draw with rival Gennady Golovkin back in September 2017.
A year later he won the rematch via majority decision, and a couple of months later he stopped Rocky Fielding in the third round.
He then moved down to middleweight to beat Daniel Jacobs on points to leave with the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF and Ring Magazine titles, before moving up to light-heavyweight to stop Sergey Kovalev in the 11th round to win the WBO title.
Canelo turned his attention back to the super-middleweight division after those two successes, retaining his WBA (Suoer), WBC and Ring Magazine titles with a unanimous decision win over Callum Smith.
He retained those belts with a third-round stoppage of Avni Yildirim, and then added the WBO crown by stopping Billy Joe Saunders in eight rounds.
There was now only one belt left for Alvarez to collect at super-middleweight, and he became the first ever undisputed champion in this weight class by stopping IBF champion Caleb Plant in the 11th.
Canelo moved back up to light-heavyweight after that, but his May 2022 bout with Dmitry Bivol did not go as planes as he suffered a unanimous decision defeat.
Following that loss he moved back down to super-middleweight and it has been all success since then.
Alvarez settled his trilogy with Gennady Golovkin with a unanimous decision win, and backed that up with points wins over John Ryder and Jermell Charlo in 2023.
Jaime Munguia Form
Jaime Munguia is a former world light-middleweight champion with an unbeaten professional record of 43-0 (34 KOs).
Munguia reigned as WBO light-middleweight champion between May 2018 and September 2019, winning the title and then defending it six times.
That reign included a unanimous decision win over Liam Smith in July 2018 and a unanimous decision success against Takeshi Inoue in January 2019.
The 27-year-old Mexican moved up to middleweight after that run and made a successful debut at the weight class, knocking out Gary O’Sullivan in the 11th round.
From there he stopped Tureano Johnson in the sixth round to claim the vacant WBO inter-continental title, and went on to successfully defend the belt three times.
Munguia stopped Kamil Szeremeta in the sixth round, and then beat Gabriel Rosado by unanimous decision before knocking out D’Mitrius Ballard in the third.
The knockout wins continued in 2022 as he knocked out Jimmy Kelly in the fifth and Gonzalo Gaston Coria in the third, and over the last 12 months he staked his claim for this fight.
He beat Sergiy Derevyanchenko via unanimous decision to win the vacant WBC silver super-middleweight title last June.
Munguia then successfully defended that belt by stopping John Ryder in the ninth round back in January of this year.
Verdict
Jaime Munguia has never lost, but he has never shared the ring with a talent like Canelo Alvarez.
While Munguia is a high-volume puncher, Canelo throws with precision and power, and we expect his class to be the difference over 12 rounds.
