Mario Barrios vs Manny Pacquiao Preview & Picks
Mario Barrios is tipped to beat the returning Manny Pacquiao by decision.
Pacquiao may be a legend, but he is long past his prime and has not fought in almost four years.
We have to go with the younger, fresher and more active Barrios getting the job done over 12 rounds.
- Mario Barrios’ last 3 fights have gone the distance
- Manny Pacquiao has not fought since August 2021
- Manny Pacquiao has not won a fight since July 2019
- 5 of Manny Pacquiao’s last 6 defeats have come on points
Mario Barrios Form
Mario Barrios is the reigning WBC welterweight champion with a career record of 29-2 (18 KOs) with 1 draw.
Barios made his professional debut in November 2013 and worked his way into the world title picture by winning 26 straight fights.
His first big outing ended in defeat though, as he was knocked out by Gervonta Davis in the 11th round in June 2021.
That was followed by a second defeat as he then dropped a unanimous decision to Keith Thurman the following year.
Barrios rallied from their losses and got his career back on track when he knocked out Jovanie Santiago in the eighth round.
The 30-year-old then backed up that victory with the biggest win of his career to date, out-pointing Yordenis Ugas over 12 rounds to claim the interim WBC welterweight world title.
He made his first successful defence of that belt in May 2024, beating Fabian Maidana on points, before being upgraded to full champion.
Barrios’ first defence of the full title was a disappointing one though, as he went to a split decision draw with Abel Ramos last November.
Manny Pacquiao Form
Manny Pacquiao has held world titles in eight different weight classes and returns from an almost four-year absence with a record of 62-8 (39 KOs) with 2 draws.
Pacquiao’s glittering career has seen him share the boxing ring with a who’s who of fighters form the past couple of decades.
One of his most spectacular runs came in a 12-month period that saw him stop Oscar De La Hoya in eight rounds, Ricky Hatton in two round and Miguel Cotto in the 12th round.
Fans clamoured for a showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr for several years, and finally got their wish in May 2015 when the two met in Las Vegas, with ‘Money’ taking the fight on points.
Pacquiao rebounded with points wins over Timothy Bradley and Jessie Vargas the following, year, only to then suffer a surprise defeat at the hands of Jeff Horn.
The 46-year-old bounced back to knock out Lucas Matthyse in the seventh round, and then break Adrien Broner on points to earn a welterweight world title fight in the summer of 2019.
The Filipino icon won that big fight, beating Keith Thurman by split decision, but that would prove to be his last win to date.
After two years away he returned to the ring in August 2021, and that fight ended in a unanimous decision defeat to Yordenis Ugas. He has not fought since.
Verdict
Manny Pacquiao’s record speaks for itself, but it is a long time since he has fought and an even longer time since he last won a fight.
We simply have to go with Barrios in this one, but just in case ‘Pacman’ does have something left in the tank, we are going to back the Over because he is unlikely to KO the champion.
