Mario Barrios vs Ryan Garcia Preview & Picks

Ryan Garcia is tipped to win the WBC welterweight title via knockout.

Garcia’s career has stalled in recent years, but he still combines blistering hand speed with brutal left hooks.

That spells trouble for Mario Barrios, who has shown defensive frailties and can be dropped.

  • 20 of Ryan Garcia’s 24 career wins have been by knockout
  • 8 of Ryan Garcia’s last 11 fights have ended inside the distance
  • Mario Barrios has failed to win 4 of his previous 7 fights

Mario Barrios Form

Mario Barrios is the defending WBC welterweight world champion with a professional record of 29-2-2 (18 KOs).

Barrios debuted in November 2013 and rattled off 24 consecutive victories to catapult himself into the world title picture in late 2019.

He claimed the vacant WBA (Regular) super-lightweight title with a unanimous decision win over Batyr Akhmedov, and successfully defended it a year later by stopping Ryan Karl in the sixth.

The 30-year-old American reign was ended in his next defence though, as he stepped up a level and was knocked out by Gervonta Davis in the 11th round.

Barrios followed that with a unanimous decision defeat to Keith Thurman, but the move to welterweight helped him get back on track as he won his next three fights.

‘El Azteca’ knocked out Jovanie Santiago in the eighth round, and then claimed the interim WBC title with a points success against Yordenis Ugas.

He successfully defended that championship in May 2024 as he beat Fabian Maidana by split decision, and was later upgraded to full title status before his second outing of that year.

His first defence proved to be a disappointing one as he went to a split decision draw with Abel Ramos, and in his sole defence last year he went to a majority draw with Manny Pacquiao.

Ryan Garcia Form

Ryan Garcia is a former interim lightweight world champion with a professional record of 24-2 (20 KOs) with 1 No Contest.

Garcia entered the pro ranks in June 2016 and picked up several minor titles as he worked his way into world title contention with 20 consecutive wins.

His first big fight came in January 2021 when he took on Luke Campbell for the interim WBC lightweight crown, and he took his big chance as he stopped the Englishman in seven rounds.

The 27-year-old Californian failed to make a successful defence though, and spent over a year on the sidelines before finally returning to action with a unanimous decision win over Emmanuel Tagoe.

Garcia backed that up by stopping Javier Fortuna in the sixth round, but he failed to make it to 24-0 as he was knocked out by Gervonta Davis in the seventh round.

‘King Ryan’ responded with an eighth-round knockout of Oscar Duarte, but he has not won since that December 2023 outing.

He failed to make weight when he was scheduled to challenge for the WBC super-lightweight title, and although he did beat Devin Haney in a non-title fight, that victory was later overturned to a No Contest after Garcia failed a drug test.

He then suffered a unanimous decision defeat to Rolando Romero when he returned from his suspension last May.

Barrios vs Garcia - What They Said

Mario Barrios: "Ya’ll know what I bring every time I step in there. They said that he’s focused, that we’re going to get a Ryan that’s 100% and that makes me happy to hear, so when I whoop a** on February 21st there won’t be no excuses. The boxing fans are going to get a great fight and this ain’t a fight that you want to miss."

Ryan Garcia: "I’m really honored to be part of this huge fight. This is how it’s supposed to be. WBC, I can’t thank ya’ll enough.I am definitely super prepared for this fight, you guys. I’ve been really, really focused. You can do a lot of talking, at the end of the day the fight is February 21st."

Verdict

The last few years have been rough for Ryan Garcia, but this is a good opportunity for him to kick-start his career.

Mario Barrios can be hit and he can be dropped, and Garcia possesses the speed and power to take full advantage of that.
