Teofimo Lopez vs Jamaine Ortiz Preview & Picks
Teofimo Lopez is backed to retain his world title via decision.
Lopez’s power and athleticism is likely to be too much for Jamaine Ortiz, who tends to fade as fights wear on.
- Teofimo Lopez has won 19 of his 21 professional fights
- 4 of Teofimo Lopez’s last 6 victories have come by decision
- Jamaine Ortiz has gone the distance each of his last 5 fights
- Ortiz went the distance in both of the fights he has failed to win
Teofimo Lopez Form
Teofimo Lopez is the WBO light-welterweight champion with a professional record of 19-1 (13 KOs).
Lopez won his first world title back in December 2019 when he knocked out Richard Commey in the second round to win the IBF lightweight crown.
He then added the WBA (Super), WBO and Ring Magazine titles in October 2020 thanks to his most impressive performance to date.
The 26-year-old New Yorker earned a unanimous decision victory over Vasyl Lomachenko, who was considered one of the pound-for-pound best at the time.
Lopez failed to make a successful defence of those titles though, dropping a split decision to George Kambosos Jr in November 2021.
He has rebounded from that disappointment, reeling off three straight wins while becoming a world champion for a second time.
‘The Takeover’ knocked out Pedro Campa in the seventh round to get back to winning ways, and then beat Sandor Martin on points to land a world light-welterweight title shot.
Lopez made the most of his opportunity, dominating Josh Taylor on his way to a unanimous decision win that earned him the WBO and Ring Magazine titles.
Jamaine Ortiz Form
Jamaine Ortiz enters the first world title fight of his career with a professional record of 17-1-1 (8 KOs).
Ortiz won several minor titles before suffering the first blemish on his record back in April 2021.
He went eight rounds with Joseph Adomo and had to settle for a majority draw in his 15th professional fight.
The 27-year-old American bounced back quickly as he earned a unanimous decision win over Nahir Albright in February 2022.
Then, three months later, he registered the most notable win of his career so far, claiming a unanimous decision victory over Jamel Herring.
That earned Ortiz a fight with one of boxing’s biggest talents, but he failed to make the most of his big opportunity as he lost a decision to Vasyl Lomachenko.
He did, however, rebound immediately from his first professional defeat, beating Antonio Moran on points last September.
Verdict
Teofimo Lopez is the better boxer with a lot more top-level experience, so we expect him to remain world champion in Las Vegas.
