Winnipeg finished the regular season with a 10-8 record, and that was enough for them to ‘crossover’ into the East half of the playoff bracket.
The Blue Bombers’ win total eclipsed that of Toronto, who won just five times, and that meant their fourth-place finish earned them a shot at the postseason.
Their chances of making the playoffs took a serious hit as they lost three-in-a-row between late August and the middle of September, but they rallied over the final few weeks to get the job done.
Winnipeg snapped the skid with a 26-18 win over Ottawa, and backed that up with a 40-3 blowout of Hamilton before losing 25-20 in Edmonton.
The Blue Bombers bounced back over the final couple of weeks though, following up a 17-16 win over Saskatchewan with a 19-10 success against Montreal.
Montreal Alouettes Form
Montreal also finished the regular season with a 10-8 record, which guaranteed them second place in the East and a place in the postseason.
The Alouettes made a strong start to the season as they won five of their first seven games, only to go cold in August as they lost all four of their matchups.
They dropped their opening game of September too, before finally stopping the rot with a 48-31 victory in Saskatchewan.
Montreal backed that up with a 21-19 win in Toronto, and then beat Calgary 38-20 before winning back-to-back meetings with Ottawa, 30-10 at home and 39-28 on the road.
The Alouettes ended the regular season on a losing note though, as they were beaten 19-10 in Winnipeg.
Verdict
Winnipeg swept Montreal in the regular season, and we expect more of the same here.
The Blue Bombers’ defense was able to shut down the Alouettes during the regular season, allowing just 23 total points, and they are backed to do it again in the playoffs.
