The 125th edition of the US Open takes place at Oakmont this week, but who will rise to the challenge and win the third Major of the 2025 season?
Bryson DeChambeau is back to defend his title after a one-stroke victory over Rory McIlroy in 2024.
The Oakmont Country Club has hosted the U.S. Open on nine previous occasions, in 1927, 1935, 1953, 1962, 1973, 1983, 1994, and 2007, with Dustin Johnson winning the 2016 edition held at this venue.
These are our four selections that could win the title this weekend.
Scottie Scheffler
Scottie Scheffler was thereabouts at the start of his season on the PGA Tour, finishing T9 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, T25 at the WM Phoenix Open, T3 at the Genesis Invitational, T11 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and T20 at the Players Championship.
Scheffler has been back to his best since the end of March, placing T2 at the Texas Children's Houston Open, 4th at the Masters, T8 at the RBC Heritage, victory at the CJ Cup Byrson Nelson, victory at the PGA Championship, T4 at the Charles Schwab Challenge, and victory at the Memorial Tournament.
The world's number-one-ranked golfer has made five appearances at the U.S. Open, with results of MC in 2016 at Oakmont, T27 in 2017, MC in 2019, T7 in 2021, T2 in 2022, 3rd in 2023, and T41 in 2024.
Scheffler has been in outstanding form lately and will fancy his chances of winning his maiden U.S. Open at the Oakmont Country Club this weekend.
Bryson DeChambeau
Bryson DeChambeau had a solid beginning to his season on the Asian Tour and LIV Golf Tour, finishing 2nd at the International Series in India, T6 in Riyadh, T18 in Adelaide, T20 in Hong Kong, and T10 in Singapore.
DeChambeau has found another gear since those performances, placing 5th in Miami, T5 at the Masters, T2 in Mexico City, victory in South Korea, T2 at the PGA Championship, and T4 in Virginia.
The two-time Major winner has made ten appearances at the U.S. Open, with results of MC in 2015, T15 in 2016 at Oakmont, MC in 2017, T25 in 2018, T35 in 2019, victory in 2020, T26 in 2021, T56 in 2022, T20 in 2023, and victory in 2024.
DeChambeau has been in tremendous touch lately and can win the U.S. Open for the second consecutive year at the Oakmont Country Club this Sunday.
Jon Rahm
Jon Rahm had a disappointing start to his season after missing the cut at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic on the DP World Tour.
However, Rahm has been in excellent touch on the LIV Golf Tour and at the Majors since that result, placing T2 in Riyadh, 6th in Adelaide, T6 in Hong Kong, T5 in Singapore, T9 in Miami, T14 at the Masters, 4th in Mexico City, T7 in South Korea, T8 at the PGA Championship, and T8 in Virginia.
The former world number one has a long history at the U.S. Open, placing T23 in 2016 at Oakmont, MC in 2017, MC in 2018, T3 in 2019, T23 in 2020, victory in 2021, T12 in 2022, and T10 in 2023.
Rahm has been knocking hard throughout his season and has the form to win the title in Pennsylvania this weekend.
Sepp Straka
Sepp Straka enjoyed success at the beginning of his season on the PGA Tour, with results of T15 at the Sentry, T30 at the Sony Open in Hawaii, victory at the American Express, T7 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, 15th at the WM Phoenix Open before missing the cut at the Genesis Invitational.
Straka has maintained his level of play in his subsequent ten events, placing T11 at the Cognizant Classic, T5 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, T14 at the Players Championship, T28 at the Valspar Championship, MC at the Masters, T13 at the RBC Heritage, T12 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, victory at the Truist Championship, MC at the PGA Championship, and 3rd at the Memorial Tournament.
The four-time PGA Tour winner has featured four times at the U.S. Open, finishing T28 in 2019, MC in 2022, MC in 2023, and T56 in 2024.
Straka has won twice this season and could cause an upset victory in Pennsylvania this weekend.
Verdict
Scheffler has not put a foot wrong lately and can secure back-to-back Majors at the Oakmont Country Club come Sunday.
DeChambeau has the game to win his third U.S. Open title this weekend.
Rahm has been in thereabouts this year and can emerge victorious come Sunday.
Straka has been in top form this season and should enter calculations in Pennsylvania this weekend.
