The PGA Tour and players head to North Carolina for the last tournament of the regular season at the Wyndham Championship, with the FedEx Cup playoffs on the horizon. Who will win the championship this weekend?

Tom Kim will not be back to defend his title after a five-stroke victory over John Huh and Sungjae Im in 2022.

Past major winners in the field include Stewart Cink, Jason Dufner, Lucas Glover, Zach Johnson, Davis Love III, Shane Lowry, Hideki Matsuyama, Adam Scott, Webb Simpson, Justin Thomas, Jimmy Walker, and Danny Willett.

These are our four selections that could win the tournament this weekend.

Sam Burns

Sam Burns had an excellent opening few months at the start of the 2022/23 PGA Tour season, placing T30 at the Sanderson Farms Championship, T7 at the CJ Cup, 12th at the Hero World Challenge, 32nd at the Tournament of Champions, T11 at the American Express, T6 at the WM Phoenix Open before missing the cut at the Genesis Invitational and Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Burns bounced back to his best after those two disappointing performances, placing T35 at the Players Championship, 6th at the Valspar Championship, victory at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play, T29 at the Masters Tournament, T15 at the RBC Heritage and T11 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

The 27-year-old form has been erratic lately, with results of MC at the Wells Fargo Championship, MC at the PGA Championship, T6 at the Charles Schwab Challenge, T16 at the Memorial Tournament, MC at the RBC Canadian Open, T32 at the US Open, T19 at the Genesis Scottish Open and MC at the Open Championship.

The American placed a credible T13 overall on debut at the Wyndham Championships in 2022.

Burns will have a chance to win the championship at the Sedgefield Country Club if he can regain consistency in his game.

Russell Henley

Russell Henley produced two lacklustre performances at the start of the PGA Tour season, missing the cut at the Sanderson Farms Championship and finishing T46 at the CJ Cup before returning to winning ways with victory at the World Wide Technology Championship.

Henley struggled with this game after that triumph, with results of MC at the Houston Open, T30 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, T32 at the Sony Open in Hawaii, MC at the WM Phoenix Open, MC at the Genesis Invitational and T53 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The American rediscovered his touch after those displays, placing T19 at the Players Championship, T17 at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play, T4 at the Masters, T19 at the RBC Heritage, MC at the PGA Championship, T16 at the Charles Schwab Challenge, T16 at the Memorial Tournament, T14 at the US Open, T19 at the Travelers Championship, T35 at the John Deere Classic before missing the cut at the Open Championship.

The 34-year-old finished T46 in 2016, MC in 2018 and T31 in 2019 in the first three attempts to win at the Sedgefield Country Club before reeling three impressive results by placing T9 in 2020, T7 in 2021, and T5 in 2022.

Henley has gone close to winning this event in his last three starts and can challenge for victory at the 2023 Wyndham Championship if he can replicate those performances.

Denny McCarthy

Denny Mccarthy had a fair beginning to his PGA Tour season, finishing T25 at the Fortinet Championship, T39 Sanderson Farms Championship, MC at the Shriners Children's Open, T37 at the CJ Cup, T6 at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, T53 at the Houston Open, T46 at the RSM Classic, T32 at the Sony Open in Hawaii and T50 at the American Express.

McCarthy has been featuring high up on the leaderboards since February, placing T4 at the AT&T Pebble Beach, T14 at the Genesis Invitational, T13 at the Players Championship, T19 at the Valspar Championship and T52 at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play.

He followed that with T25 at the RBC Heritage, T11 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, T8 at the Wells Fargo Championship, T29 at the PGA Championship, 2nd at the Memorial Tournament, T20 at the US Open, T7 at the Travelers Championship, and T6 at the John Deere Classic.

The American's only disappointing results were at the WM Phoenix Open, Honda Classic, Charles Schwab Challenge and Open Championship, missing the cut on each occasion.

The 30-year-old has made five appearances at the Wyndham Championship, placing T36 in 2018, T22 in 2019, T9 in 2020, T15 in 2021, and MC in 2022.

McCarthy has been knocking hard and will fancy his chances to lift the trophy in North Carolina come Sunday.

Harris English

Harris English had a decent start to his season on the PGA Tour, finishing T9 at the Fortinet Championship, MC at the Sanderson Farms Championship, T28 at the Shriners Children's Open, T40 at the CJ Cup, T32 at the World Wide Technology Championship, T39 at the Houston Open, T29 at the RSM Classic and T73 at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

English lacked consistency in his game during the next four months, missing the cut on five occasions; however, he did achieve some solid results in between by placing T12 at the Genesis Invitational, T2 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, T31 at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play, T43 at the Masters and T63 at the RBC Heritage.

The American has been in better shape since the end of April, placing T13 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, T3 at the Wells Fargo Championship, MC at the PGA Championship, T12 at the Charles Schwab Challenge, T52 at the Memorial Tournament, T8 at the US Open before finishing T60 at the Travelers Championship and MC at the Open Championship.

The 34-year-old has contested the Wyndham Championship on eight occasions, finishing T10 in 2022, T31 in 2015, T46 in 2016, T50 in 2017, T11 in 2018, T39 in 2019, T23 in 2020 and MC in 2022.

English has been thereabouts in recent months and offers excellent value at the Sedgefield Country Club.

Verdict

Burns has secured a victory on the PGA Tour this season and has the game to come out on top at the Wyndham Championship.

Henley has shown that he can perform well at the Sedgefield Country Club and should enter calculations this weekend.

McCarthy has been ultra-consistent with his performances on the PGA Tour lately and will fancy his chances to emerge as the winner come Sunday.

English has some solid form and is the long-shot value best in North Carolina.
