Arizona travelled to Chicago on a poor run of form, having lost six of their previous nine games.
The Diamondbacks’ rough run started in Los Angeles as they were swept in a three-game series by the Dodgers, losing 7-4, 9-1 and 7-0.
They stopped the rot with a 4-2 upset of Baltimore at home, only to lose the next two meetings 7-3 and 8-5.
Arizona made a winning start to the series with Colorado too, taking it 4-2, but again they failed to build on a win.
The Diamondbacks lost the second meeting with the Rockies, 3-2, although they did rebound immediately with a 12-5 victory last night.

Chicago come into this series on a solid run of form, having won seven of their last nine games.
The Cubs rebounded from a 6-2 home defeat to Milwaukee with 1-0 and 3-2 victories over the Brewers.
They then travelled to Cincinnati and won the series opener against the Reds, 6-2, only to lose the next two meetings, 3-2 and 2-1.
Chicago were able to split that series though, taking the final meeting 15-7, and they backed up that win when they returned home.
The Cubs started this week by beating sweeping San Francisco, beating the Giants 5-0, 11-8 and 8-2.
