They lost the final game with the Reds, 7-1, and then fell to an 11-5 series-opening defeat to Baltimore.
St Louis took the next two meetings with the Orioles however, recording 5-2 and 1-0 victories.
The Cardinals failed to follow them up as they then lost 5-4 and 6-1 at home to Philadelphia, but they did avoid being swept thanks to a 6-5 victory.
Verdict
