Head To Head
- Dustin Poirier beat Justin Gaethje by fourth round TKO in April 2018
Dustin Poirier Form
Dustin Poirier is the #2 ranked lightweight contender with a professional record of 29-7 (14 KOs, 8 Subs) and 1 No Contest.
Poirier fought and beat his opponent, Justin Gaethje, during a six-fight unbeaten run between February 2017 and April 2019 that culminated in him winning interim lightweight gold.
His fourth round TKO win against Gaethje came on the back of a third-round submission win over former champion Anthony Pettis.
He then knocked out Eddie Alvarez in the second round of their rematch to set up an interim title fight with Max Holloway.
‘Diamond’ produced the best performance of his career to date as he beat the featherweight champion on points to win the belt.
Poirier was unable to turn that into a full championship reign though, as he was submitted by Khabib Nurmagomedov in the third round of their world title fight.
He rebounded quickly with a decision win against Dan Hooker, and then followed that up with a huge TKO victory over Conor McGregor.
The 34-year-old American won the rematch too, when McGregor suffered a fight-ending injury, and that landed him another shot at the lightweight crown.
Poirier again came up short as he was submitted in the third round by Charles Oliveira, but he bounced back in November of last year when he tapped out Michael Chandler in the third round.
Justin Gaethje Form
Justin Gaethje is the #3 ranked contender in the lightweight division with a 24-4 (19 KOs, 1 Sub) professional record.
The former World Series of Fighting lightweight champion debuted in the UFC in July 2017, knocking out Michael Johnson in the second round.
His career stalled after that though, as he was knocked out in the third round by Eddie Alvarez and was then stopped by Dustin Poirier in the fourth.
Gaethje got his career back on track with a string of first round knockouts, finished James Vick, Edson Barboza and Donald Cerrone to get into title contention.
‘The Highlight’ then knocked out Tony Ferguson in the final round to win the interim lightweight crown.
However, just like Poirier he came up short when challenging Khabib Nurmagomedov, suffering a second-round submission loss to ‘The Eagle’.
Gaethje rebounded in his next outing as he beat Michael Chandler by unanimous decision.
That victory earned him another world title fight, but again he came up short as he submitted by Charles Oliveira in the very first round.
The 34-year-old American got back to winning ways in March though, besting Rafael Fiziev by majority decision.
Verdict
Dustin Poirier was too much for Justin Gaethje in the first meeting, and has only got better since.
We expect to see similar scenes here as Poirier breaks down Gaethje and comes away with a stoppage win.
