Ronda Rousey vs Gina Carano Preview & Picks
Ronda Rousey is tipped to win this super-fight between two MMA legends.
If you compare the two women at their peak Rousey was clearly the superior fighter, and she comes into this contest as the younger fighter who has spent less time on the shelf.
We expect Rousey to give us a flashback to the old days as she takes Carano down and forces her to tap out to an armbar.
- Ronda Rousey has a 12-2 professional record
- 9 of Ronda Rousey’s 12 career wins have come via submission
- Gina Carano has not fought since August 2009
Ronda Rousey Form
Ronda Rousey is a former UFC and Strikeforce bantamweight champion with a professional record of 12-2 (3 KOs, 9 Subs).
Rousey made her MMA debut back in March 2011 and quickly established herself as not only the biggest female fighter on the planet, but one of the sport’s biggest attractions.
She won the Strikeforce bantamweight title in only her fifth professional fight, submitting Miesha Tate in March 2012, and five months later she used her signature armbar to finish Sarah Kaufman in her fist defence.
Following that victory Strikeforce was merged into the UFC, meaning women’s divisions were introduced to the world’s premier MMA promotion for the first time, and ‘Rowdy’ Ronda was the biggest reason for that.
Rousey was named the inaugural UFC women’s bantamweight champion and she made her first defence February 2013 as she submitted Liz Carmouche in the first round.
The now 39-year-old then beat Miesha Tate via third round submission as they two heated rivals met for a second time, and she followed that up with her first couple of knockout wins in the UFC, stopping Sara McMann and Alexis Davis in the first.
‘Rowdy’ went on to submit veteran Cat Zingano in the 14 seconds and knock out Bethe Correia in 34 seconds, taking her record to 12-0 and setting up a huge title fight with former women’s boxing standout Holly Holm.
Her reign came to an end in that fight though, as her aura of invincibility was shattered by a second-round knockout loss to Holm in November 2015.
Rousey fought one more time under the UFC banner, in December 2016, and that resulted in a 48-second knockout loss at the hands of Amanda Nunes.
Gina Carano Form
Gina Carano compiled a 7-1 (3 KOs, 1 Sub) record as she became the biggest female fighter in mixed martial arts between 2006 and 2009.
Carano debuted with knockout wins against Leticia Pestova and Rosi Sexton in 2006, and those victories earned her a spot in the Strikeforce promotion before the year was out.
She closed out the year, and marked her Strikeforce debut, with a unanimous decision win over Elaina Maxwell.
That victory landed Rousey a deal with the EliteXC promotion in 2007 – a company that had intentions of challenging the UFC for the number one spot in mixed martial arts.
Carano made a successful debut as she beat Julie Kedzie on points, and she followed that up with a first-round submission of Tonya Evinger eight months later.
The victories kept coming for the now 43-year-old, as she improved to 7-0 by stopping Kaitlin Young in the second before out-pointing Kelly Kobold over three rounds.
EliteXC folded following that card, and ‘Conviction’ subsequently returned to Strikeforce for what would prove to be her final fight for well over a decade.
She faced Cris Cyborg for the inaugural women’s featherweight title in August 2009, and was knocked out late in the first round.
Rousey vs Carano – What They Said
Ronda Rousey: "Been waiting so long to announce this – me and Gina Carano are going to throw down in the biggest super-fight in women's combat sport history. This is for all MMA fans past, present and future. More to come… much more."
Gina Carano: "Ronda came to me and said there is only one person she would make a comeback for and it has been her dream to make this fight happen between us. She thanked me for opening up doors for her in her career and was respectful in asking for this fight to happen. This is an honour. I believe I will walk out of this fight with the win and I anticipate it will not come easy, which I welcome. This is as much for Ronda and me as it is for the fans and mixed martial arts community. What a time to be alive."
Verdict
Ronda Rousey may not be the terrifying force she once was, but we expect her to register a signature submission win here.
Rousey is the more rounded fighter, has ‘youth’ on her side and fought much more recently – that should give the edge against a women who has not fought for almost 17 years.
